I know from another thread by @Green79Scottsdale the you can remove the needles to repaint them and that they screw off. The question is are they right or left handed thread and how tricky is it. My guages are the first make and are back order everywhere. So I don't want to break them. Any suggestions?

Very tricky, they are pressed on. I made a tool to remove them. Like a small ladies slipper, 1/2" wide sheet metal a couple inches long. Bend a small curve on the end. Hacksaw a slot down the center of the bent end.

Use that to gently pry off the needle from each side of the pin. You can just pull it off, but you might bend the pin.

Take a piece of paper (white) and use a hole puncher dead center. Then cut a line to the hole.
Slide it around the base of the needle and paint it.
Don't have to remove the needle at all.
