Hey guys my name is Destin I’m new to this forum I have a couple questions.

So I just bought a 1987 k10 the guy pulled the 305 out and put a 396 motor in but took the a/c and heating systems out and didn’t bother to put them back in what do I need to do to reinstall them now that it has the bigger motor in it? If you could give me some help and guidelines it would be great.

Thank you

Had anything been messed with on the firewall, or is all that stuff intact? Some pics may help with that part of it.

I can send pics tomorrow when I get it home. But no there isn’t anything on the fire wall just a big hole where the heat box used to be. I will definitely keep you guys updated with pics some time tomorrow

Do you have all the original parts and what's your budget? If you are missing a good portion of the firewall and under the hood parts, it's probably more cost effective to go with an aftermarket heating and A/C like Classic Auto Air or Vintage air. The complete kit is about $1500. Part of the problem with going OEM is if you don't have the brackets, etc some parts are very hard to come by. If you only are looking to go with a heat only, then I would source OEM parts. That could be done pretty inexpensively.

There's not a boneyard or Pull-A-Part anywhere near you?

You should be able to score a complete system for a few hundred $$ that's OEM.
The rest is just elbow grease.

I went to two pick and pull places in MD and VA last weekend to look for parts. The one in Brandywine, MD had two square body trucks, but neither had A/C. The Pick Apart in Stafford, VA is kind of rough and ratty, but they had an '83 Blazer and an '87 Suburban with A/C. The Blazer had most of the A/C intact, but the Sub was missing quite a bit in the engine compartment. If its worth the drive, you might be able to pull most of what you need off the Blazer.

I would find a donor truck for the blower fan, evaporator housing, and evaporator (that would fill the holes in the firewall). Then find a kit with compressor, brackets and hoses to adapt a Sanden compressor to the old system GM. The original GM A6 compressor (really unreliable) and R4 compressor are not that great, and its not worth trying to get them to work. You can probably use a stock condenser, but a newer parallel flow would be more effective. You may want to change the GM white orifice to a Ford blue orifice, which is supposed to work better with R134a. Use PAG oil in the viscosity recommended by Sanden (probably PAG 100), instead of the old mineral or ester oil that was used with R12.

Once you get it all installed, pay an A/C shop to charge it with R134a at about 75-85% of the charge recommended for R12. Its usually better to stay closer to 75% to start out. If you get a good A/C shop they may be able to tweak it gradually and check for best pressures and temps. However, most shops just want to tell them how much R134a to install.

I wish someone sold the entire heater/ac box. Hard to find one for sale on Craigslist or Ebay. I see a lot of heater boxes for non ac trucks but not what I need. Mine isn't working correctly and it's my daily driver. I guess I will have to go to the salvage yards but don't really have time for all that.

Let me look around

I may still have the heat ac box from my truck
I installed vintage air

I might have controls on the dash and the underdash stuff
