Late to the party, but I am with the others that replacing a single piston isn’t a big deal, just match it up as close as possible and weight match to the rest.

Heck, for my own personal use I wouldn’t be above cleaning the offending piston up. Smoothing the dings out and run it. Provided everything else checks out ok ring grooves are not hurt.

Once upon a time it was common (not sure how common it really was, but certainly was done and there are examples out there to prove it) to do things like overboring one cylinder and having a single oversized piston, or a single journal ground undersized on a crank and matching bearing(s) to suit. I suppose mentality was a little different when vehicles were considered best traded off at 50k and totally wore out by 100k.

I have a Howard’s cam in my 76 (flat tappet) and have no complaints about it.

Well, unfortunately, that camshaft is not available until April so back to the drawing board. Lots of people have recommended the XE 268H, I just don’t want that damn much lope. I really hate this thumper cam cause it has to idle so high

I bought 8 new pistons just to be sure

Since 2010 I have told people the engine I built for my Read 85 that later went into my White K 10 was a 355. I distinctly remember discussing with the machine shop the cost to bore out each cylinder 30 over.

Imagine my surprise, when, after I spent $300 on 4.030 pistons and rings, I took the time to look at the Pistons that just came out of this block, and they are 4 inch even. I’m the one that ordered the original pistons and put them in lol. Why did I ever think this was a 355?

Anyway, just ordered the right set, and I’ll have to send these back to Summit.

I had that same machine shop put the pistons on the rods back then. Do you guys have any tried and true methods to put the new Pistons on the old rods, without messing anything up? I’ve always heard freeze one part heat the other. Is it just as well to bring them to a shop to have put on?

I should add, I went to measure the cylinders and could not find my micrometer. Went to AutoZone and O’Reillys just now, they don’t have any. So I took the new piston, 4.030 and stuck it on the block. Does not fit lol. Just wanted to check that by the off chance that somehow I put 4 inch pistons in a bored out cylinder. I’m sure I would’ve had major issues. Had that been the case.

Massive amounts of work to get this crusty exterior ready for assembly. Scrubbing everything with degreaser, I already had ARP head bolts in, had to get all the old coolant passages sealant off of them. Had to use aircraft paint remover on the block and heads to get two layers of red and one layer of black off. I didn’t want to do orange on this engine, but then I saw an engine with an orange block, black heads and intake and polished valve covers and I thought that looked cool so that’s what I’m going to do.

Tomorrow I’m going to borrow my buddies valve spring tool, the two that I have only worked while the head is on the block. I can’t keep the valve up while I compress the spring so I need that big C clip one.

I may have mentioned this before, but jegs called me today and said the Howard’s camshaft and lifters won’t be here till April so now I’m back on the train looking for another cam.

I used an old school grind on my vortec 350. The 327/300hp camshaft. Really woke up the engine. If you're going roller, there has to be something comparable in lift and duration.

I've been away for awhile, saw you mentioned me, but you got your answers.

Did your friend overrev that engine? Has to be why it's been parked this whole time. At least you have it and can make it good again.

That little truck will have plenty of power with a stock 350, let alone a vortec 350. Don't expect the same mileage as the 283, though.

God, I hope it doesn’t get worse mileage lol. Hopefully with this new five speed things will be a lot better.

I ended up with the comp XE268H cam. It has a little bit of sound, but there are so many reviews speaking about its low and power.

I found out a friend of mine works at a local machine shop on the weekends. He’s going to polish the crank, swap out the pistons onto the rods, do cam bearings, and plugs, and punch out the cylinder’s 30 over. That way, I won’t have to worry about irregular cylinder surfaces, etc. Going to cost me almost $600 but I feel like that’s a good investment.

With OD it'll be fine, without it, unless the gears were changed, mileage would definitely suffer.

That's cool you have that resource for machining, 600 is a good deal.

The Tremec TKX. Got a quote from Silver Sport Transmissions today, for the unit, crossmember, bell housing, and a bunch of other ****. I’ll have to buy the hydraulic clutch setup a little later on, before the install. Hoping to pull the trigger on the trans stuff by Tuesday
