Took this video while getting gas. Going to get a vacuum gauge this week and fool with those mixture screws.

Has bad vapor lock. Drove it like 80 miles today, and at one point coming down from 70 mph to a stoplight, it quit and I let it sit for a while, poured ice water on the fuel pump and Line, and then remembered you’re supposed to floor it when you crank it to get the vapor out and that worked, then it didn’t act up again.

Drove it 70 and 75 miles an hour for extensive periods of time and the temperature gauge never moved, that new radiator did the trick. One weird thing, and it may just be the old gauge, but the oil pressure would start out at like 50 or more, and then over the course of 10 or 15 minutes of driving highway speeds it would drop down to like 35.

I shortened the cable on the Manual choke and it’s much easier to push in and out now. I set it with the fast idle so that when you engage the choke, there’s like 3/16 of opening between the blade. It still doesn’t really want to run so it can warm up. I guess I need to adjust it again. Or maybe I’m not really sure on how to engage the fast idle. Someone told me close the choke, and then hit the gas once and that sets it. I didn’t do that this morning, I just closed the choke and cranked it. Then I basically had to read the engine for a while and then take off while it was still cold just so it would run.

Although the RPM at idle is not surging anymore, I’m still not 100% convinced that I don’t have a vacuum leak. I need to spray more carb cleaner around it next time it’s running.

I was really careful to hand wash all surfaces inside the cab, but while me and my son were riding today, we kept getting tons of dirt and rust particles all over us and in our eyes at highway speeds. I think it’s definitely the kick panel vents. I need to take those vents out and do some cleaning Because it’s so bad that when I get home, I have to use a leaf blower to blow the cab out.

My son and I took it to church today, they have the biggest and most well-known pumpkin patch in the area, and when I was leaving, they called me and asked me if they could use my truck as a prop with hay in the back like they have had several years prior. At first, I said, yes, but the more I got to thinking about it, do I really want it sitting on the side of the highway, day and night for the next month unattended? And do I really want random kids and or grown men opening the hood? Not really. So I had to politely decline. It’s insured for 25,000 through Haggerty, but I still don’t want it to sit in a church parking lot while I could be working on it and driving it for the next several weeks.

You will not be able to set the mixture screws correctly if you have a vacuum leak. If the mixture screws don't audibly make a difference when you run them in and out. Then we need to figure out why so we can figure out what needs to happen. You still need to put a vacuum gauge on for diagnostics, vacuum can tell us lots of things Next time you start it cold hold the pedal down maybe 1/4, pull the choke, then try to start it,in that order. IDK where you bought your carb. Did it come with an installation guide. To set fast Idle, with choke on you turn the fast idle screw in until the engine will idle cold. But you want to be sure the fast idle screw isn't touching the fast idle cam with the choke off.

The carb was on it when I bought it. The mixture screws do change the engine characteristics. I watched a video of an old timer on how to set the mixture screws with a vac gauge on the carb I had and he said screw them all the way in then back out 2 turns. Then adjust with gauge from there so today I screed them in one at a time and backed them out 2 turns each, engine wanted to die when I screwed tjem in

Finally! I could afford a running driving 60s pick up. I sold my 2022 Honda CB 1000 R to get this. Went from doing 160 miles an hour on the freeway to 55 lol.

My first truck was a 64 GMC suburban, I’ve been chasing that feeling ever since. I’ve had several, none of them running, all project trucks, all sold before they realized their potential.

Introducing pokey. 1965 Chevrolet C 10 stepper. Factory 283/3 speed three on the tree. She has some rust in the usual places, but the hood is solid. I took the windshield out today, getting a new one tomorrow and it’s completely solid all the way around so I’m happy about that.

I paid 8000 for it which around here is pretty standard. Changed the belt after it left me stranded, changed the water pump after it started leaking the other night. Added some lights under the dash. Changed a leaky rear axle shaft seal. Removed the purple tint off the back glass. Painted the Chevrolet on the grill and tailgate. Sanded the white paint off the little piece by the door that somebody had sprayed.

Other than that, I’ve just enjoyed the hell out of it, had it for a couple of weeks now. She’ll do 70 something, probably faster if you wanted to blow it up with high RPM. She likes 55 the best. I’ve put 800 miles on it in in just a few weeks.

I was going to do the roadkill thing and just patch up this 283 drive train as I went but to hell with that, it really needs an automatic transmission with overdrive and honestly, the best bang for the buck to make it reliable is an LS. I’d love to have it with a 5.3 or something. So that’s what I’m going to start saving parts for. Any tips and tricks are welcome. I know there are people that make harnesses for the transmission and engine that deletes all the BS.

The 283 has a really good oil leak, and the transmission, besides being three speed leaks gear oil really badly. The shifter has gotten stuck a few times, I’ve had to unstick it. Needs to be rebuilt with bushings, but honestly, I’m just ready to get rid of it. It’s kind of a chore to drive anywhere but the highway.

If I can get power steering on it, with an LS and auto trans this thing would rock more. I want to keep the truck on the road as much as possible. Going to be replacing some floorboards and rockers at some point but only if I can do it in two or three days and then drive it. I like to be able to drive it to the gym Every day. I’d like to get all the stuff for the LS swap so it’s down a minimal amount of time, waiting on stuff like driveshaft changes, etc. only.
Now THAT's a score.

Spent all day and 300 dollars building my own exhaust. I really like how it came out, and it sounds good. I’m still having problems getting it to idle. I haven’t got a vacuum gauge yet. But now that the headers are quiet I can hear loose rockers so I was about to snug them up, when I heard something metallic and the truck died. But it cranked and ran with no problem, but the rockers got REALLY loud. Then I started to think, that’s rod knock.

Pulled the passenger side cover where it was loudest and found this. One locked up bent pushrod and and another pushrod just resting I in the hole in the head just out of reach. I reached in with a pick and started to pull it out, but then it fell into the engine.

I give up. Truck can sit, I’m kind of sick about it all

There's a very good chance that you can fish it out with a magnet though this hole:

I forgot to add, one of those magnets on a formable aluminum rod are very useful for that.

That was the whole that I initially grabbed it with the pic from. But when I had it halfway out, it fell and went into the abyss. I guess I could try to find a smaller magnet. But what about the Rod knock sound?

I can't remember, this is a new cam, right? You may have a couple valves that are tight at the higher lift levels.

Yeah new cam lifters and springs, I did the “turn the pushrod and tighten till it stops then half a turn” method when I put it back together. But then we adjusted them running and I couldn’t hear them to get them not clattering because of the open headers.

I’m slapping in 2 replacement rods this morning and making me a valve cover with a hole in it and I’ll adjust them till they quiet down and hopefully all will be well
