I grabbed a carb and took a couple of pics for you. One pic has a square one pic has the whole transition port exposed, looks like a slit. You want a square. Check your vacuum at idle also as well as your fuel pressure. You are running an edelbrock 1406 aren't you?

I’m at like 37 degrees total timing. The truck idle is all over the place from 900 to 1100. My step dad (who built 8 sec cars) thinks the valves are too tight, he referring the popping sound he hears.

When it cools down I’m gonna take the valve covers off and adjust them while it’s running

I keep thinking vac leak like under manifold tat would explain the fluctuating idle

I messed with the mixture screws but ended up putting them were they were originally

Were you using a vacuum gauge? To find highest vacuum reading on each screw?

No.

Definite vacuum leak. Place hand on carb, idles up. Let off, down.

Sprayed carb cleaner can’t tell if it’s carb or manifold. Step dad said pull plug wire off dizzy one at a time. Number 8 came off, no difference. He said pull that plug if it’s wet, vacuum leak. If it’s dry valve too tight idk I have to let the truck cool

Sorry, when it comes to the fine details of engine tuning, I don’t know ****. I don’t even have a vacuum gauge anymore. I will get one though.

Coming off the valves seemed to do wonders for how the engine is running. It doesn’t alternate idle speeds like it did before. I still think it might have a vacuum leak at the manifold. Honestly, I would like to get an aftermarket intake so I wouldn’t have to use the Mr. gasket adapter for the carb anyway.

We were spraying carb cleaner and on the passenger side down by the manifold it would rev up. But after adjusting the valves, I didn’t try that again and left the truck at my mom‘s until I can afford to get the exhaust finished.

Well guys, bad news. I loaded the truck up on the trailer to bring it to my friends house closer to my house, and ruined the passenger fender, bumper, and scraped the door. I thought I had enough room on that side, but it didn’t work out.

Sucks but it is what it is. I can get another fender, it doesn’t match anyway.

The good news is when I got the truck to my friends house in the country. I drove it down the highway several miles and back and it has no problems doing 65 and 70 without feeling like it’s going to explode. I must’ve had the valves way too tight.

Still can’t afford to get the exhaust finished right now, but I made some brackets last night for the seatbelts which I’m going to install today

Well sir I apologize for just assuming you had more expierience. I been doing this sh!t so long,I always just take it for granted that everyone else has lots of expierience. I'll try harder to explain things I greater detail in the future. Now for anyone reading,if you are going to adjust valves with the engine running sacrifice an old valve cover by cutting a big rectangle window I'm the top just big enough to get to you adjuster nuts. Glue a cork gasket to the vave cover and put the valve cover on ,just snug on one side. Now run your engine and adjust your valves. Now remove the windowed valve cover put on the good valve cover and repeat on the other side. They also make deflector clips to help control oil splash,I'm happy with just a cut valve cover. In a real jam cut a big piece of cardboard, set it on the head inside the sealing where the valve cover goes, hold it with one hand and adjust your valves. The cardboard wall will control the oil splatter.

My dad had a valve cover that was cut like that. I don’t know where it went. I used the cardboard method.

Got the seatbelts in and tested. Drove the truck about 20 minutes at 70 and it did great other than being loud as hell still. Got some hard stares when I’d stop at a light and it would go to chopping hard.
