Can a 456 posi unit from a 12 bolt have the ring gear swapped to a 308 and work in a stock 308 12 bolt rear?

No. It varies by axle but 99% of axles have different carriers for groups of gear ratios. The reason is the pinion gear diameter changes depending on the number of teeth (ratio), this in turn forces the ring gear flange on the carrier to need to move inboard or outboard of the pinion centerline.

For instance, a D44 has a different carrier for ratios up to 4.09 and from 4.56 on.

GM 10 and 12 bolt axles have (I think) 4 different size carriers. Some applications can use a spacer to adapt single carrier jumps but I'd bet that the jump from 3.08 to 4.56 is 2 carriers.

Also, the 4.56 ring gear would not match up to the 3.08 pinion gear. Ring and pinion gears need to match.

The wording is a little confusing but I'm pretty sure he's asking of he can use the posi from a 4.56 axle in his 3.08 axle (w/ his 3.08 gears).

If you had a 3-series carrier and wanted to run 4.56 gears they sell a "thick gear set" to compensate for the offset. But with a 4-series carrier the lowest gears you can run will be 3.73 which might not be a bad option if you get an overdrive trans down the road or go up in tire size.
