C20 suburban with moderate drop, what shocks?

Howdy all,

Old Tina now has around 3” drop in the rear and 2 inch coil drop and 2.5 spindle drop up front. I’m running stock kyb gas adjust shocks and I don’t think the throw is right on these as they are resting mid compression.

Anyone have any lowered shocks they use for c20 or c30?

@bluex is kinda the go-to guy for this question. He's put together a lot of good info in some threads here and I know he's ansered this question. If you search his threads, I'm sure you will find a good recommendation.

You have the right shocks on it

Spindles do not affect suspension travel so you don't factor them into shock length. With a 2" drop spring (or even 3") there's no need for a drop shock.

It's there a reason/issue your having that is making you question it? The gas-a- just are going to give you a better ride than any drop shock on the market.

Thanks! Got a bit of body roll and the front end makes some noise when I hit speed bumps, almost sounds like bottoming out .

Thanks! Got a bit of body roll and the front end makes some noise when I hit speed bumps, almost sounds like bottoming out .

A Sway bar is the answer for the body roll

An you'll bottom those tires out in the inner wheel well before you bottom out the suspension. That's probably what you hearing. I bet if look towards inside upper corner of the inner you'll see rub marks. It looks great but those are some big tires for a 4.5" drop. What size are they?

Do you think I would improve drivability with qa1 or Bilstein fixed shocks?

I personally don't, people love those fancy shocks but imo the difference isnt worth the price.

If you feel your bottoming out, its definitely the tires in the wheelwell. 73-80 inners or some mild slosh tubz would be a better investment imo.

I only rub on hard downhill fast turns, other than that none. The sound I’m getting is a hard rebound clang and bounce back feel. Almost like riding on airbag bump stops.

Might be hitting bump stops. The 2" spring and 2.5" spindle I had on mine would bottom the stop against the spring pocket there was only around 1.5-2" before they touched and then only compressed another 1" or so also when jacked up or bounced hard enough so the suspension was unloaded the spring would move around in there. I ended up back on stock springs because of this and not being able to get my jack under the crossmember with a flat 26" tire.

Take a peek in there with it on the ground and see how much space you have in there might be experiencing the same issues I was. When I swapped them out just jacking it up there was no compression on the spring, I could wiggle it around with the suspension just hanging and could take it apart without supporting the lower arm.

This is a pic where you can see with weight on it there is not much room there, I highlighted it with 2 red lines. (I was checking wheel/tire fitment here for my fender well headers)

Thanks, checked it and we are good. Curious if Bilstein are much better than kyb

FYI I put Bilstein on and they are 10k percent better than kyb
