So the paint on my 87 is done for, its an older but good quality repaint as the truck was probably a factory peeler.

I am going to get it presentable so I can drive it a few months and get all the mechanicals 100% and make sure it has no major issues that would superseded a paint job budget.

The patina, or whatever, was ok with me but it has a bunch of streaks in it. Looks to have been stored in a very leaky carport or outside in Washington state so extra rain. The drivers side got the brunt of the sun.

I’ll post some pics up today and this week.

But here is the starter photos and Ill post some later of what 3 applications of Meguiar #7 did.

This is 2000 grit wet sand and Meguiar #105 at 2300 rpms white foam pad. I broke through, I was 7 beers in and someone was bothering me.

Only nice thing on this truck is the bed.

Another angle of front fender, think I need something more coarse than 2000.

The pinstripe is here to stay for now.

Started wet sanding with 1000 and the pinstripe seems to not mind. Gonna do that then 2000 then buff with 105 again maybe with a wool pad if I can find one.

Yeah the tires are not too bad on price and practically true to size unlike the rest. 50lbs per tire isnt too too bad.

This old 350 isn't gonna like to spin much more.

1000 grit down the drivers side. Got about 80-90% of the water streaks out. On a side note the truck is surprisingly straight with just one door ding and one small ding in the bed. Must have not been a Walmart shopper.

Looking good. I was able to bring my original 87 paint back a bit. Has some shine using Meguiar's products. Used #1 medium-cut cleaner to start with. I would have blown through the paint if I tried to wet sand. Then I used #9 swirl remover 2.0. Finished with #205 ultra finishing polish. Then I waxed with #26 high-tech yellow wax.
Looked pretty good. Just glad this is a SWB.

Yeah this paint is pretty much trash I can still see the streaks with 1000 grit, but barely. Gonna 2000 grit it now and see.

After the #105. Not much paint left. Gonna try to get through the #210 tonight.

Got some good results. Amazed at how much dead paint came off this thing. Need to do some touching up this week and soak it in glaze before waxing it. Good enough results where i regret breaking through now.

So I went as about as aggressive as possible on this thin paint. I wouldn't be scared to wet sand with 1500 or 2000 grit.

The only things I wish I would have done was research pinstripe removal, not got impatient and burned through one spot, tapped off the hard edge at the upper body line (above the door handle around the whole truck).

Definitely tape off that body line edge I mentioned and I recommend a smaller buffer. May like a 4 inch buffer would have worked better.

That's a lot of work but looks to be worth it.
What kind of glaze are you going to use?
