So, the OE auxiliary fan finally bit the dust. Sourced a nice replacement from Summit- made by same company that made the original. Mounted it to the OE cage/bracket easily, cut the connector off the original and soldered it onto the new fan wires.

If anyone needs to replace theirs, this is definitely better than scrounging around the junkyard trying to find one that fits- at least for me. The U pull yard around here has gotten a bit high on the pricing I think.

Do you know what option / scenario dictated a truck getting the auxiliary fan?
Not sure on squares, but in the OBS it was dependent on a 2500/3500 having a big block and towing package. Every now and then I see one come into the yards....but I believe that fan and bracketry is actually available new from Rock Auto. I know it used to be because I was looking into getting it....

As mentioned, pretty sure on Squarebody 3/4- towing package. My truck has the towing package and has both aux fan and oil cooler.

Will confirm - my 1989 Burb has the tow package listed in the glovebox RPO codes and has both the aux electric fan and oil cooler. Oil cooler was held in by ONE zip-tie when I bought it, despite all the factory bracketry being present behind the grille. Looked like the rivets holding the cooler to the brackets failed, and rather than fix it properly with new rivets or use screws thet decided one zip-tie was adequate. The fan fortunately was still in its factory supports. I have the RPO code for trailer towing package but have 3.73 gearing and not sure if I originally should have had a 7 way plug or not since everything back there relating to trailer wiring was chopped to ---- by previous owners.

To those with the option, what is the RPO code?

Z82 was the code for my 1989 that crossreferenced to TRAILERING PACKAGE-SPECIAL-REESE TYPE HITCH.

I'm not certain but I think ordering the Z82 package automatically enabled other codes.

UY7 is the code specifying 7 WIRE, 2 LEAD FRONT HARNESS, 5 LEAD REAR HARNESS but I'm not sure that means I'm supposed to have a 7 way connector in the back.

KC4 is the engine oil cooler code.

VR4 is the weight distributing hitch.

V02 specifies heavy duty radiator and transmission cooler (assuming internal to radiator I don't have and don't see any evidence of an external transmission cooler).

I don't see a speific code for the aux cooling fan, but I do have an E6D code which I never have been able to find what it means, and I have an AU8 code which supposedly references to a remote entry option that would not have existed in 1989. I also have power locks which should have been an AU3 code, there is one unreadable code on my sticker so I'm assuming that is it.

I have all those codes, except the AU code. I have an external trans cooler, mounted next to the aux fan- with what seems to me to be factory bracket. I’m replacing it with a Hayden 512 this week, so I’ll confirm that. Also have the oil cooler. 3.73 gears according to the glovebox.

I did have one of the round pin trailer plugs, along with one of the old hydraulic brake controllers. So, can’t really say what trailer plug it had originally.

My 86 C20 454 with towing package and 3.73s has it (14 bolt axle).

We actually deleted it when we installed e-fans (the aux. fan for some reason started to run constantly) but I might add it back in.
