Anyone used the old ash tray for something (else) that's interesting?

While working on the dash this weekend I had some ideas for what to use the ash tray space for. Maybe tuck aux fuse panels in there or weld it up and smooth it out (delete it). Anyone use it for something else? Lots of space there.

You're too quick for me Retro!

The thing I like about having the sat receiver there is the door still works. I can pick a station and then flip the door shut so it's out of the way.

Wow. That looks amazing. Any more shots of your dash?

Back in the early 90s, I had a 79 that I put a power window kit on, I put the window switches in the ashtray, kinda the same concept as the sat receiver.

My sat radio is in my tuner so I can't do that though.

With everyone carrying smart phones and ipods (i've never owned either) for their portable plug-in music, most people wouldn't want or need to do something like this. It works great for me though, I have additional docking stations in the house and pontoon boat so it's easy to pop out the receiver and go with it.

There's a couple of generic interior shots in my photo album but it's just a standard dash like everyone else's. I do have this pic showing some metal trimming had to be done in order for the sat to have enough head room.

Occasionally, while making a repair or testing a transmission, I need to refer to a tachometer. But unless it is incorporated into the original instrument cluster, I don't want to see one in the cab.

Any mounting I've ever seen looks out of place and makes the owner seem like a wannabe drag racer.

This is the ashtray part:

If you like to watch your RPM's and are looking for a place to mount a tach (but don't want to alter the stock layout of the cab) , consider pulling the ashtray and mounting one on the backside of the door.

Sunpro makes a nice tach with a 2 5/8" dial that should fit perfectly.

Open the ashtray door to monitor RPM's and flip it closed when done.
