I just found the bumper mount receiver hitch at Harbor Freight. It says it's rated for 5K lbs. Anyone have any experience with it? Will the stock bumper on a 87 V1500 handle it?

If it's what I think you are talking about, other companies sell them too. If your bumper is still in good shape, it should work OK. Most rear step bumpers are rated for 4-5K or 400-500 tongue weight.

as long as your bumper is solid and you watch your weight, they work good. And it helps if the trailer is brake equiped, a non-brake trailer is alot more stress on those and sometimes try to twist them(bumper also). Atleast bigger trailers are(such as a car trailer-loaded), not a lawnmower trailer.

The hitch reciver(or whatever its called) plays a big part also, if its a drop receiver, theres alot more leverage on the bumper. But if its just straight out, Its just fine.

That one doesn't look very stout at all, probably should look into a Reese or a Curt. I'm not sure I'd even trust that HF unit to tow around a little utility trailer.

I wouldn't buy anything from harbor freight let alone something that involves your safety and the safety of others who happen to be on the highway. my 2 cents. highdesertranger
