84 c10 won't idle

84 c10 with a 305. It has a summit racing cam, Largest you can use with a stock torque converter don't remember the specs off hand. It has a summit racing 650 carburetor. All of a sudden out of the blue the truck won't idle without giving it just a tad bit of throttle. I just changed the spark plug wires thinking I had one grounding out to the headers. That's not it. I also have an intermittent popping coming through the exhaust. It stumbles then dies. If you hit the gas as it stumbles it will pick right back up runs a bit high rpm for about 20 seconds then stumbles and tries to die again. I also plugged all the vacc ports with caps to no avail.

Double checked firing order after replacing plug wires? Possible dead cylinder due ti bad plug or wire?

Did anything change with your vacuum advance? A lot of times people run big cams on manifold vacuum to get good idle. Did that get swapped to ported vac by chance? Did timing change or did you bump the disti/timing while changing plug wires?

Also, just a check given it was “out of the blue,” is there a chance there is trash in the idle circuit of the carb?

It started doing it before I changed the plug wires. Just pulled the plugs and they are a little bit wet and pretty black.

Well I changed the plugs and wires engine sounds better but still won't idle without stumbling and stalling. I guess I will rebuild the carb and clean it up. I'm not very good with carbs lol wish me luck....any tips appreciated.

Get a white sheet from the thrift store and spread it out in your workbench to disassemble the carb on. Makes finding tiny parts much easier. Spray carb cleaner through every nook and cranny . Take your time, take lots of pics, and you will do fine.

You could have a dirty or bad needle & seat, causing the float to be too high & flooding the engine. You're probably washing cylinders if it's rich, better get that float set properly!
