Are all 82-92 700r4s the same?

My 700r4 went out on my 85 gmc, wondering what years would work with my truck? Can’t really find any direct answers online

Are they all the same? No. Will they interchange as a whole? Yes.

For things that you need to know in a trans swap:

The inputs went to 30 spline in '86, so converter has to match

2wd and 4wd outputs are different lengths

Some models starting in '86 were electronic speedo output instead of cable.

Strength/durability speaking, 700R4s up until 1986, not so great. 1987 -1992 are the goodins.

Look on the psssenger side of the case. If it has the St Louis arch casting line above the servo, and has a TV cable, it’s a good core to build.
