ok, Thanks. Hoping to snag a 4L80E someday and convert mine over to it along with the pin out for wiring harness too.

Pops is the one to talk to about the Pin Out on 4L80-E. Keep in mind you have to have a stand alone computer or an ECM equipped vehicle. You're 97 could be converted, but it'll be hell changing driveshafts etc and adapting to your Tcase. Personally, I think you'd be better off with a well built 4L60-E after yours takes a dive. There are 4L60-E's out there now running 700-800hp without problems. Just depends on the build is all.

NO, L is longitudinal install which is front to back for Rear Wheel Drive.
a T for transaxle which is transverse install is for Wrong Wheel Drive. Doh, aka Front Wheel Drive.
What does the "80" mean then?

80 is the strength rating, as is the 40, 60, 65, 80 etc,
So a 4T40-E would tell me its a 4 speed FWD strength of 40 and is computer controlled. With a 40 rating, its probably behind a 4cyl in a light car.
The 4L65-E is a bit stronger rated than the 4L60-E for example. The 4L65-E usually has 5 pinion planetaries instead of 4, which are backward compatible to 4L60-E and 700r4, 4L65-E also has a better 3-4 clutch pack than the 4L60-E also easily changed in a 4L60-E. And a 4L80-E is stronger than the 4L60-E obviously. The 4L80-E is what replaced the Turbo 400 with an OD, and the 700r4 aka 4L60 replaces the Turbo 350, later becoming 4L60-E since its now computer controlled with solenoids instead of governor and TV cable, and also Vac switch to control lock up converter.
So now you know all that, tell me what a 4T60-E is and what is likely used in???

So the 700r4 is a 4L60?

Yes, just like a Turbo 400 is a 3L80. Same exact transmission, just renamed when GM went to the simplicity model naming system, so the names were changed to go along with the current model structure. So a 4L60-E is nothing more than a computer controlled 700r4. And many and most of the internal parts will interchange between 700r4, 4L60, 4L60-E and 4L65-E. Valve bodies and pumps are differant though. Point is, you can really make a 700r4 a good transmission using the later 4L60-E and 4L65-E internals. Many parts are also interchangeable between a Turbo 400 aka 3L80 and the 4L80-E. Some of the internals will interchange. When I build Th400's now, I upgrade a snap ring known as a spiral snap ring that is used on 4L80-E's. Keep the intermediate sprag from coming loose much better.

BTW, you failed 89S !!! Didn't I teach you anything with all that???

OK Class, anyone else wanna try? What's a 4T60-E and what is it likey used in?
:baby:

Uhhh, a 4T60E is a 4 speed, transaxle, electric control and heavy duty, so proabbly a V-6? :sad72:

What do the 350, 400 and the 700r4 mean? 350 is the wekest and the 700 is the strongest, right?

:waytogo: See how simple the new way is??? :winner_first_h4h: Actually not heavy duty, but stronger than a 4T40-E, so yes its for V6's primarily.

No, they mean nothing really. Just model #'s. This is why the new way is so much better and why GM went to it. A Turbo 400 is way stronger than a 700r4. I personaly believe as Th350 is also. But, 350 and 700r4 have the same rating as 60 for strengh.

I was told to swap it when it goes. The 4L60E have issues shifting hard.

My van has a 4T60-E...

Used behind 4 cylinders and even Cadillac used it behind the 4.9. Mostly the 3.8 V6 though.

The Cad may have actually been the 4T65-E also, used behind V8s like the GXP and Impalla SS Wrong wheel drive with the aluminum 5.3. Same things just a tad beefier in the planets and a few other little things like more cluthes in the drums and stronger servos.

Nope, 1991-93 4.9 powered cars used the 4T60-E...

The GXP, SS and supercharged cars use the 4T65E-HD.

I'm sure you're right way back then. I do not think the 65 existed just yet in 91-93.
