Hate when this happens !!! I didn't build this one, I promise. Its a stocker on a high performance car. If I recall and remember the story correct, this was done on a nitrous launch. Also very rare to see a 700r4 come apart like this.

th = Turbo Hydramatic, Pretty much the common coined name for a GM Transmission, as in Dodge using Torqueflite as theirs. Then there is the old Dynaflows etc etc. Tons of names.

I know what the 'th' means. Just never heard it placed at the beginning of 700R4  I've always just known it as a '700R4' and not a 'th700R4'

That is because specifically, when you see 700r4, you know what someone is speaking of, where as with the 350 and 400, you usually specify t350, Turbo 350 or th350 so that you know someone is speaking of a transmission and not an engine. Same with 400. If I said, I blew up my 350 today, you'd most likley think I was reffering to my motor. If I said I blew up my Turbo350 or Th350 today, you'd know I trashed my trans. So if I said, I blew my 700r4 today, you'd know what I was reffering to and no need to include the th. Just not the need to specify with a 700r4 so people don't do it.

If you'd like I can bore you to death with GM transmisison names and history, like Super Turbine 300, Dynaflow, etc etc.

Ok, Whats the "L" mean in the 4L60 and 4L60E?

Longitudinal

4 = speeds, L or T = Longitudinal or Transaxles Installation, and 60= Torque series in stregth.

So a 60 is not as strong as an 80 for example. and the -E specifies Electronic or computer controlled.

So a Turbo 400 is now a 3L80
So IF a Turbo 350 lasted into the name change era, it would have been a 3L60 and a 3L60C with a lock up converter. And a 4T60-E

Is a front wheel drive 4 speed with the same rating as a 4L60, and is a computer controlled transmission. GM got smart and its now easy. Even a cave man can figure it out.

NO, L is longitudinal install which is front to back for Rear Wheel Drive.
a T for transaxle which is transverse install is for Wrong Wheel Drive. Doh, aka Front Wheel Drive.
