I feel your pain with a cr@ppy thermostat. Had the oscillating temperature on my jeep cherokee after installing a motorad thermostat. It would get up to running temp and then drop, running temp, drop. Dug out an old Stant that I kept, installed it, steady running temp, no fluctuations whatsoever. Unfortunately motorad had taken over, Stant is no more, even if you get a Stant box, 99.99999999999% it's been reboxed with motorad.

After reinstalling the old Stant, I decided to buy a bunch of Stant thermostats to have on hand for years to come. My research concluded that each of my pre-1992 vehicles used the same thermostat, so I ordered 10, and with the two I already had, that would leave four for each vehicle should one need to be replaced. Each Stant box had motorad in it. I returned all of them. After returning those, I looked in the Stant boxes that had for a few years, motorad inside them. WTF!

This is where the gauge sits in my 88 burb.

Either I have a bad sender or gauge…or a really low temp thermostat. I need to look into this aldlroid thing.

I also think I need to clean my IAC because rpm fluctuates in Drive, but not Park or Nuetral. Not sure that’s temp related or not.

my 350tbi burb runs at 195-200 when it is cool outside and 195-210 when it is warm outside and depending on engine load. but my gauge isn't accurate. it reads on the 2nd hash at 195deg engine temp. it is pretty close to 210 when the gauge reads 210. I monitor CTS with ALDLDroid, so I know what the temp is at the t stat.

my tstat is a little lazy opening. temps on the gauge approach 210 or a little higher before it opens all the way on a cold start. subsequent starts while engine sort of warm it doesn't swing so high before the t Stat opens up.

as far as I know, if the engine is cold, it won't set a engine light. I'd pull codes. but one of the things it tests for in the highway is EGR operation.
Assuming you are using an ALDL to USB cable and a laptop, do you have a cable you’d recommend?

Darn it. I’ll see if there’s any other options. What was the manufacturer’s name? Maybe there’s a used one on eBay.

I emailed them about a half hour ago. Looks like I need to pick up a cheap android tablet if I want to monitor without a laptop in the vehicle.

Can't you get a Bluetooth dongle for your laptop

Laptop has Bluetooth. I was just thinking it’d be nice to monitor while on the road without having a $2000 laptop bouncing around.
