What are some signs I need to upgrade? Or is this something I should just go ahead and convert to a three wire since I have nothing currently?

as long as it will get hot, a 1 wire is fine....not sure there is any difference except the heating element in the 3 wire

A 3 wire is electrically heated to bring it up to temp sooner . Things are already sketchy with your mounting location,and headers which won't retain as much heat,you need every advantage you can get use a 3 wire.
