I have a 350 block, that I want to make high HP on a budget. All that I have is the block and I don't know what I need to get up to the heads..from there on I have experience... But I don't even know what parts are below the heads. I know the crank, cam and pistons. Is a crank the first step? Is there a kit I can buy that has EVERYTHING I need to get up to the heads?

I have the block and that's it.. I have a ticking/ knocking 305 that still has all its power so I'm sure I can use a few parts here and there from that

Or do this or something similar: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/nal-19210007/overview/make/chevrolet

Unless your dead set on building one or having one built. Do you have somebody you can trust to help you build it? I certainly wouldn't just walk into a shop and tell them you have $3k to drop on 400hp. You will likely get the ol' proverbial shaft.

I really want to build it.. I was thinking 383 at first but I've heard that's more challenging

You can buy the base 350/260hp crate engine new, put a set of Dart heads and a 12-238-2 cam in it, and have a brand new engine with 400hp/430lbft, and a very nice broad torque curve. That engine ought to come in right around your budget, but there's extra money needed for headers, new intake manifold, new carb, etc.

.030 over flat tops.
906/062 Vortec heads
.015 Felpro head shim
Alumium dual plane intake
knifeedge the crank
a nice came with some overlap.
you should be around 400-450 depending on how far down in the hole your pistons are in the block.

Get a rotating assembly off of ebay.

A 350 at 5000 rpm and volumetric efficiency of .90 is:

350 in^3 * 2500 per min * .9 * 1/(12 in/ft)^3 = 450 cfm

That's about the most you can pump through a naturally aspirated 350 at 5000 rpm. Another way to put it is you will run out of air through that carb at 5000-5500 rpm. The Dart heads will rev higher than that, but you won't notice any difference to 5000 rpm. If you want to get above that, you need to go to 600 cfm on the carb.

Building a motor will always be WAYYYY more money than if you just get a crate motor.

Yes building a motor can be fun.. but realistically... think of how much you want to spend.
