Should be right on top under the motor end of the upper radiator hose.

okay i know that part but do i have to remove the throttle body

Nope. Throttle body removal should not be necessary

okay thanks

trying to talk to my friend on the phone on how to find it on his truck when they have know clue what they are looking for plus they just drove six hours and had the problem start and check engine light came on and increased the engine temp

2002 vortec meaning 4.8,5.3,or 6.0?

If so, the above is not correct. The thermostat on those motors is on the bottom hose where it meets the water pump.

For real?? If I've given bad info I do apologize but I could have sworn that when doing the thermostat change on my dad's '04 5.3 that we got to it on the top of the motor :think:

No. The thermostat on LS engines is in the neck of the waterpump on the bottom hose.

99-02 have the thermostat integrated into the neck, have to buy the whole neck.
03+ have the thermostat in the neck, but it's removeable.

aji is correct, a whole bunch of the newer cars and trucks are putting them in the lower hose
