Hello!

I'm trying to rid of the 16.5 wheels that are a hassle to find tires for. I dont want to go to a 17" wheel. Will 16"s fit and clear everything?

Thanks everyone for any help!

Did someone replace your wheels with older ones? I though by 87 all the 3/4 tons had 16" wheels.

They "should" clear. My '79 K20 came with 16's stock.

I just double checked my '87 3/4 ton, factory rims were 16". the set of steelies I grabbed from a '90ish 'burban were 16" too. somebody must have swapped yours out over the years. The other thing to watch out for, unless I'm mistaken, I think the 16.5" were the old style split rims?

They were not split rims, just regular 'ol 16.5's without a safety bead to help retain the tire. It was for easier service in the field.

I don't think the dangerous type of split rims have been around for 40 years or better.

Yeah, I couldn't recall the specifics on the split rims. Heck, I can't even remember the last time I saw a set.

The old "widow maker" split rims. There was a certain design of locking ring that was known to blow off the rim if there was any rust buildup or if they were improperly installed.

Yep. Warn makes a good hub.

Yep that would be a Dayton rim! I didn't know they were ever made small enough for a pick up.

I always thought the Dayton rims were the ones with the giant 5 or 6 spoke hub and the rim is held to the hub with studs/nuts and little wedges. The rim itself is one piece though, the tire gets put on like any other regular rim.

A Dayton is a "widow maker"
