Interesting, my 03 engine was cable. It may just be the model. Mine is actually a LM7 from a Tahoe. Actual car engines may be wire.
I bought mine new, but it was late in the year. Maybe they changed mid year.

I've also started looking. I've found several low mileage salvage titled vehicles(salvaged for body issues) for around the $2000 range. There are definitely an early year range and late range for the LS truck engines. I believe the AFM changes came in around 2008 or so. These gave variable valve timing and cylinder shutoff to the 5.3 and 6.0 engines after those years. The LQ4 and LQ9 that everyone tends to swap in are pre-AFM and were made between 1999-2007. The post 2007 6.0L has variable cam phasing and AFM. Those later years would also have a 6l80 or 6L90 6-speed auto rather than the 4L80 that sits behind the LQ4 and LQ9

My 2009 1 ton van has a 6L / 4L80e. Bought it in Missouri & had it shipped north.

Whats the biggest difference between the 5.7 and 6.0? I've heard the 6.0 was a torque monster.

It was definitely a roll-out change. Not all vehicles changed the same year.

I've got a flex fuel L59 out of a 2002 Tahoe and it's DBC.

My 04 Escalade donor is DBW (LQ9 6.0 & 4l65e).
LQ9 has more hp and torq due to piston design.
As mentioned above I would stay with Gen 3 engines to avoid DOD and other fuel mileage features. You can have DOD removed when programming if you find a good deal on your swap.

If you want a 4l80e, I would suggest finding a 3/4 or 1 ton and pull together as a working unit instead of piecing together. This will help avoid any issues during your swap.
This combination will more likely be LQ4 and 4L80e.

As far a DBW goes...I prefer this option. No pedal cables to deal with and it's simple to setup cruise control, just need a 4 wire column switch (83 and up). For the pedal you can use the donor, or if you want the same look as original just use a 90's 6.5 diesel pedal. This is what I've done. Only requires swapping 2 wires on the assembly.

I used LT1swap for a good share of my swap. A great source of information. Had him flash my PCM as well.
