Chevy 14 bolt - gov bomb locker???

As discussed in another thread i was told there are LSD and something referred to as a governor lock or “gov bomb”.

I have had almost nothing to do with diffs in the last 30 years as i just send them away to get built.

Even less to do with locking diffs, as i bought one. Then sent it away to get built.

And nothing to do with chevys or their diffs!

Anyone identify which diff this is????

Looks like an open carrier. The simplest way to identify the gov-loc is there are only 3 cross pin openings in the carrier halves. An open unit has 4. There are other ways to tell based on how the carrier "looks", but the cross pins are very obvious to anyone that can count.

Open diff everything is just inside where you can't see it. Might be able to look into one of the slots with a light and see the tips of some of the teeth of the spider gears. Yukon and a few others make a ratcheting type of locker that replaces the spider assembly.

Based on the wheels both spin the same direction when its jacked up i’m presuming it has a locker of some sort in it.

There should be little windows in the diff body - if you can see spider gear teeth it’s probably open, if you see a coil of a spring it’s a locker of some kind.

It is called the gov bomb because the locking function uses an internal mechanical design that engages and locks as the axle rpm goes higher. It has been compared to a governor with centrifugal weights. It works fine when you spin the tires up gradually after getting stuck in the mud or snow, but if you are trying to do burnouts on pavement the sudden lock can break something.

I've never had a problem with 14 B Gov Locs. Other than the wheel speed needed to get them to click in.

It's the half ton, 10 B units that explode with any kind of abuse /. overuse.

The 9.5" 14 bolt units tend to pop too. It's hit or miss. I've got one that had blew holes in the cover at some point before my ownership, but the one in my 454 SS still works perfectly, despite the truck living a life of abuse. It's on It's third engine. The 2nd engine spun a main, a couple rods and had multiple lifters that were coming apart. I'd guess the PO over revved it doing burnouts all the time. But the gov-bomb still works.

The Gov Bomb descriptions are correct but the OP’s diff is an open carrier, not a GB.

That diff appears to be a Full Floater 10 1/2" ring gear because it has the adjusters on both sides.

The question is about what differential it is, not what axle.

If it has the 4 pins, but both wheel spin in the same direction when you have it lifted up, then someone probably put in a locker. You can't put in the "lunchbox lockers" if it originally had the locking differential with the 3 pins. I replaced my spider gears with a Yukon Grizzly locker quite a few years ago and it works great. I get a little bit of tire hop when making sharp turns on wet pavement, but otherwise it is not really noticeable.
