New Process A833 4speed w/ OD MY6 MM7

Very Rare, said to be Special Order Only some places I found available info on these transmission. Dodge has used them way back in the 60's in Cast Iron form behind 426 Hemi motors so they obviously have some stength. Chevy units come in both Aluminum case for 2wd and Cast Iton for 4wd. GM RPO codes to look for are MY6 and MM7.

Total of 4 speeds, with 4th gear being Overdrive. Gear Ratios are very close to that of a 700r4 4 speed Automatic Transmission. Dodge variety came in different ratios depending on the vehicle application since they also used it in passenger cars. GM only had 1 set of gear ratios. Here is the gear ratios compare to a 700r4 4 speed Automatic

Here a couple of pics from a member on this forum who has one of these trucks that came factory with the MM7 Option. His is an 84.

I can only assume MY6 is the 2wd drive model and maybe MM7 is the 4wd model. Don't know for sure on that yet.

So I saw an ad on Craigslist last night and called the guy this morning and went to look at it. I didn't get it because I was a bit concerned about the bolt pattern to mount to a bell housing. It looked odd and I didn't think I'd find a bell housing for this rare transmission.

After coming home and pulling out an Aluminum Bell Housing I had from an SM465 purchase, I notice the bell housing was dual pattern and had that funky looking pattern on it. This bellhousing came out of an 85 K10 that the seller had upgraded to a NV4500.

So I called the guy back and talked him out of the Crossmember and Front Driveshaft that he had laying there with it. He also had the NP208 laying there, but I have 2 of those and an NP241C to spare. I don't need another. So I got the trans, shifter, crossmember and front driveshaft to a 10 bolt all for $75. Loaded it up and brought it home. The guy said it came out of a Blue 84 K10 that the motor had gone bad, so they parted the truck out long ago, and he saved the trans for his own use but never used it.

I didn't get a pic of it, but I did also confirm, the SM465 clutch disk I had here from that SM465 purchase I made long ago, does fit this input shaft. Sooo, Apparenlty, the Bell Housing, Clutch disk, pressure plate and all will be the same as an SM465.

Another thing that scared me a bit, was thnking I'd to buy the NP208 that he had laying there with this transmission for another $75, when I have 3 other Transfer Cases at home that will work. It's been said the output shaft on these NP833's are the same as a Th350 as far as diameter and spline count, which means it also the same as 700r4, Muncie M21 and M23 and other common transmission including Powerglide. Looking at the adapter here and the output shaft, It appears this is going to bolt directly to one of my NP208 or NP241C transfer cases. So no fear there either. Seems about the only thing rare about this transmission, is the transmission itself.

Trust me, I'll have all the info I can dig up, take pics of, and measurements of. I'm almost certain, the length with the bellhousing is going to be real close to the same as either a Th350 or a 700r4. This will mean driveshafts will be able to found in wrecking yards instead of having them custom cut. I'll be putting that all togehter as time permits and I get installation done.

Now for a cool tidbit !!! Did you think GM made their own shifter for this transmission like they do most, and then you end up paying $300 or so for a Hurst Competition Plus shifter and stick !!! Nope, Not this time. GM didn't make the shifter for this transmission. I found thru research, GM outsourced the shifter manufacturing to guess who???

Anybody who knows Hurts Competition Plus Shifters, will know this thing has Hurst Comp Plus written all over its design. Only thing I'm not seeing that the Comp Plus has, is an adjustable stop on the mechanism itself. I do like the grease zerk for lubrication though. I'll assure you, the shifter alone is worth the $75 I paid for this trans, crossmember and dshaft. It can use some shifter bushings though, and I know I have a OEM Hurst Blister pack of those around from my old Muncie M21 and M22 Hurst Comp Plus days !!!

I like this OEM ball too. The OD makes it pretty cool IMO. Same shift pattern as my Muncies too. But, if I drive this one like I did my Muncies, the Hurst Brushed Aluminum T Grip is going on this stick. That is the only keepsake I have left of my Muncie racing days. I'm hoping this is as strong as the Dodge units. If they can hold up behind a 426 Hemi, they should be able to hold up to me. But, this won't be a race truck. Actually hoping it to be a Fair Mpg truck and yet still have 4x4 for light to mild playing and bad weather.

So there you have it for now, until I get to doing the installation work and taking more measurements. It will be a bit. I have all I need, but my bellhousing is for a hydraulic clutch. I was thinking I prefer the manual linkage Z bar clutch. But NO, I'm going to go ahead and be happy with a Hydro sissy clutch. With my back ailments, it'll be a plus for me. Not to mention, I want to run headers, and Z bar linkage can be a real bitch working thru headers, so Hydro clutch it is. Anyone want to donate me some manual trans clutch pedals, Clutch master and slave cylinders??? Huh? I'll be shopping around for those parts and of course like everything I buy, it has to be cheap.

So yet again. I acquired more parts, now my plans have to change again. DAMN !!!

My headers dont interfere with my z-bar clutch linkage. I think it is the auto trans z-bar style linkage that dont play well with headers.

I wasn't sure about Squarebodies, but I know on my 64 GMC, it got close a bit, but still safe and just a little bit of work isn't wasn't all that bad.

So Curt, get to work and see if this trans can be adapted to NP205. This trans could be used to do your mud racing with this type of shifter and being a side loader instead of a top loader like the SM465. Although, I still think you're on the right track with the Auto trans. One drawback to this trans, is look at the gap in gear ratios between 1st and 2nd. Off-Roaders don't like that about the 700r4's, and the Early NV4500's so I'm sure they woudln't like it with this either. Second Gear is real close to what a Powerglide has for 1st gear, so I know it's still a very functional transmission.

About the same time I heard Squares came in a stepside Longbed model too. So I got one of the rarities out of the way. Now I need to get it installed, and find me a long bed stepside for the truck I put it in. Then I"ll have built the truck I want.

I'm wondering if one of the others of the Big 3 had circle pattern NP205s. If nothing else the 2WD could be divorced, but then you got the aluminum case. I would want this for a more street-friendly truck like dad's. And the wide ratio wouldnt scare me much, you still got low range in a 4x4!
