6.2 alternator conversion

Hey guys. I have an 82 Scottsdale with the 6.2. I am converting it to serpentine belt using parts off of a 2000 c3500 6.5.

My question is what pigtail adapter and resister do you guys recommend for the newer style alternator?

Based on what i found qiuckly, the 2000 detroit had 3 alternator family options

are you using the alternator to run a tachometer? one of them Will not work for that

if your alternator has a fan on the outside, it takes the middle one most likely
If its 2 pin on the outside fan, it should match your wiring now

if you have 4 pin and internal fan, then you need the top one. Mind you, the top one is a CS130-D , the CS130-D was improved upon with the AD230/AD244, which are electrcially the same and connector, but much better reliability, youd have to source one that would fit , which i dont know.
Heres a alternator that would work thats an AD244, but it would only work if you have a 140amp donor , I think. i might be wrong. ACDelco 335-1092
The duramax, in 2001, supposedly uses that alternator ,meaning that while you can use the donors alt, at least be planned to replace it with a superior unit if it dies

I am not currently, but I might someday in the future

If you wanted a larger output youd need to either use a AD244 or a CS144 which only the AD244 has the same connector here as the CS130d, the cs144 has the 4 pin but shaped differently
If you want to use your alternator for a tach, do not remove the P terminal from the connector you buy, P is one of the two outer wires. infact, if i were you, id personally keep 3 wires, you can ommit the F terminal if your PCM cant make us of that wire. But using your "S" and "P" terminals are helpful, your "L" terminal is your exciting wire. you can buy a conversion harness that adapts what you have now to that connector if youd prefer, youd eventually need to switch to the kind I showed you in the ac delco listings above

And also.
I dont remember the diameter of the pulley for the alternator that drives the tach signal so be sure that if You have the alternator that came with the donor bracket that You measure both pulleys.
If one pulley is larger than install that pulley onto Your new alternator as the reman alternators seems to always come with a smaller pulley and that scre ws with the tach signal.
If You do have the larger pulley and You are not going to be using the tach signal feature, send me that pulley.
I didnt realize there was a diameter difference and I let the pulley that was on my alternator go in with the core. It may too have been the smaller pulley:

That one in your link doesn't use a sense wire? I thought the two that HAD to be used were sense and excite?

You may have to explain this to me like I'm stupid, because alternators are kinda magic voodoo to me still.

The 10si/12si need sense,. it goes to the junction block on the firewall iirc

The excite goes to the resistor (or bulb) to excite

On the newer ones, you just need Excite, so the Cs130 in the 1987 trucks just needs the one wire. infact, i dont think gm used the sense wire in their trucks , they just had it run off the output studs voltage. Its internally wired, by not wiring it elsewhere, youre wiring it to the output stud.

This stays the same through the AD230/44 ones from gmt800s

But it no longer becomes true on the 2 pin ones starting in 2004-6 ish in gm trucks .


The P terminal, rarely used, is connected to the stator on one phase I think (?) to create a tach signal that would be the AC wave form like a tach lead
On gas engines, this is not wired to the alternator internally so you wouldnt be able to use it without first attaching it yourself

THen the F terminal is used by the PCM to specifically monitor the duty cycle . the cars that use this, are much later in age than these trucks, except the toronado/reatta and maybe some cadillacs. If the I terminal is used (Which would be to the PCM instead of a bulb), youll usually see F terminal used as well.

The L terminal is the I terminal when its not used to the computer

and the link i showed is just a direct plug in adapter, so it will retain the factory setup wires. iirc, the one that goes to the post.
In a clean application of the newer alt, you would get rid of that, and populate a connector with the wire and that wire can be run to any placew you have 12v
The furthest from the battery 12v connection (by voltage drop, connection hand offs, distance etc) you will maintain your battery voltage to THAT location, which helps with multiple batteries, extra loads, lots of lights , etc

@AuroraGirl none of this useful info is probably going to stick in my mind, so I'll probably be asking you the same question in the future. I've got a couple projects that will be employing a 230/244 and I'll have to wire them in.

Unfortunately the truck that I pulled all my parts from didn't have the alternator on it. that's why I have the reman.

I go to scrap yards fairly often. If you want I could pull you a pulley off of an alternator, just tell me what pulley you are looking for and we can figure out a shipping later.

2-5/8ths inch pulley is the correct size fir the diesel engine tachometer sensor.
