Took Crusty Biscuit on a camping trip a couple weeks ago. My sister-in-law flew out and we took her on her first camping trip. Did a 760 mile loop from here up to South Lake Tahoe and back. Took the east side of the mountains going up and the Central Valley coming back. Camped out of Bishop the first day, and the next day was up to Tahoe. That drive the up to Tahoe should have taken 3.5 hours but people were driving between 35 and 45 on the highway, plus a few sections of road construction, and it made for a slow trip. Got to see a guy pulled over right after passing about 5 cars, we were one of the vehicles passed. He flew by just as we got to the passing lane and a sheriff was right there coming in the opposite direction, he flipped around and lit him up. We got a good laugh...lol... I'd have to look at receipts to calculate the mileage, did the entire loop with 4 top-offs, never got below 1/4 tank. Can go about 4 hours between fill-ups. I did find the sweet spot for the engine too, 2600 rpm's. That's about 75 mph. Was wondering why it was running warmer than usual and I forgot that I put in a 185* thermostat in February.

I didn't get any before photos prior to washing the gunk and other crud off the surfaces. Last Thursday I began a long multi-step-process of cleaning the paint via, Purple Power, Goo Gone, Car Wash Soap, No.7 Polishing Compound, and then Wax. Right now, I need to finish with the No.7. Saturday I finished with the purple power and goo gone, then washed it with car wash and began the polishing. My goal is restore as much of the original paint inside the cab as I can. I am tired of looking at the crud, dirt, oil deposits, and rust spots in there. Here's a few photos of where I'm at now. I need to finish the ceiling and the back. The kick panels will be last since they're down low and don't require lots of overhead use of the arms. I am very pleased with the results thus far, and may go over some of the areas one more time with the No.7 before I wax everything.

Driver's Side Polished....As you can see the rust spots are numerous but with lots of elbow grease they're coming off and the paint is polishing up nicely. After some wax it should be good as nearly new.

This project was long overdue. Will be tackling a lot more in the coming days. Preparing for a car show and I want it to look as good as possible without doing a frame-off-restoration.

Was writing and selecting photos and lost the post completely. To start over now...but with less commentary...

Loaded one more photo and it worked, then added a second and it said I had reached my limits of five photos except I couldn't see them. Did a preview, there they were, but nothing that I wrote to describe the work I've done. This is BS...but let's try a third time shall we....

Next up is clean the engine to look like this....

And then install the distributor with the new vacuum advance canister, new rotor, new cap, new spark plugs, and new Petronix cut-to-fit wires so I can route them under the manifolds like they're supposed to be. Clean and reinstall the carburetor, change the oil, re-set the timing, re-adjust the carburetor, and then do a full wash and wax. The wash and wax is a full-day job with the amount of oxidation on the paint, so I took Friday off for that. Should be at least a 6 beer and half pint of peppermint 90 job on Friday...:favorites13:

Well the day of the car show was nice and cool, couldn't have asked for better weather after the weeks of triple digits we've had around here. The truck got a lot more looks this year. Entered "Under Construction" but didn't get anything. It was fun nonetheless. Lots of cool cars, a pretty good turnout this year. I didn't get pictures of all the vehicles, but got a few.

I need to go over it one more time with some wax. This time I'll hit the camper shell with some wax too. I cleaned it with a cleaner/shiner and it brought back some sheen, but a waxing would make it look even better. I'll use an easier wax this time around now that the cleaner wax has been used to get the oxidation off the paint.

The hardest part of the entire day was waxing/buffing the hood. The pecan tree had dropped enough honey dew throughout the day to make the wax turn more into a resin that couldn't be buffed out. Had I known it would do that I would've washed the hood again before applying the wax. Lesson learned for next go around.

I showed Pop the inside of the cab after showing him before pictures and he was amazed how well it cleaned up.

I need to rebuild my distributor, I think it's worn out. I can set the base timing to 10 BTDC, and when I tighten the bolt it'll jump to 12 BTDC without me touching the distributor. I read that if there's too much end play it's difficult to get the timing set correctly. I did hook it up to manifold vacuum and it seemed to run better, we were able to pull the grade doing 70-75 mph whereas before we'd struggle to keep it at 60-70 mph. I also think my carburetor is shot. It's one of those Holley rebuilds I got from LMC years ago, and had I known then that they are not build vehicle specific and run rich, I'd never bought it. It's been reliable thus far, I just know there's more adjustment from a quadrajet than this one gives up. More things on the to-do list...lol...

This bike won the Rat Rod category. It was built by a really hot girl, sorry no pics of her, the wife was with me. The girl was fun to talk to, though. A real go-getter with a great imagination, and she can weld too.

She said she'd entered the bike in a big show down in Los Angeles and won the whole thing. She said the people there with their really nice harley's and other bikes were pissed that her bike took it all. She said the bike was built from parts and pieces found around the house and she rides it daily.

Yesterday I took the truck out to haul stuff to storage and get stuff from home depot. In December 2018 I disconnected the negative cable because I knew it would be a while until I could drive again. So I hooked it up, and checked the fluids before firing it up. The radiator was dry. I had a gallon of mixed antifreeze in the house and it took nearly the whole gallon. No leaks, but the radiator was empty or close to it. The only thing I can think of is the squatters two houses down took some antifreeze from the petcock. The clamp is still tight, the hose isn't leaking, the radiator is only a couple years old and the coolant it only 1.5 years old.

It makes me wonder what they've snatched from under the '81.

I had seen vehicles loose coolant when sitting for a while without any traces. Either very minor leak that dries up or evaporation due to sysytem not being sealed(cap)
