I installed a brand new AC Delco EGR valve on our 88 burb. Only after installation did I think to see if it held vacuum…Nope. Pulled it off and put the old one back on.

Even the companies you’d hope you can trust and pay a premium for are getting not so great.

Backpressure regulated EGR valves don't hold vacuum unless they have enough exhaust back pressure to close a bleed hole. IDK if you purchased or were supposed to have a BPR EGR valve but I'd guess that's what you bought.

I bought what RA had listed for a 1988 v20 burb 5.7. I don’t see anything about it being BPR, but I didn’t dig beyond their brief description.

I'd bet it's back pressure regulated which is why it didn't hold vacuum when you tested it. Probably nothing wrong with the part you purchased.

During my time Saturday of trying to remove mangled metal, and was trying to mangle it even more to get bolts out. Found a 4-5 foot piece of 2x4, and that worked great. I was trying to do everything without grabbing power tools, as it was late in the day and the sun was soon to set. That, and we were having grilled Costco hot dogs for dinner, so time was of the essence to get the truck work done and covered back up.

On the new parts list is, fan blade and fan clutch since these took a hit in the wreck. Water pump will get replaced just to be on the safe side, and I have an extra one so that's a no-purchase item. Got some hours of demo and prep and replacing of parts, and I can do a good once over of the wiring, frame, brakes, etc, and maybe fire this thing up by summertime.
