Amazon special/ Led Headlights

There has been a lot of previous discussion about headlights and led retrofitted headlight. Many claim that led bulbs cannot be used in reflector housing because of law and or because they do not have sufficient light cutoff and blind other drivers.

Can't say for certain wether or not they are legal. But where I live in Oregon led and hid headlights are a dime a dozen especially with those you would call "car guys". And I don't think the cops care a whole lot aslong as your lights are properly aimed and not harnessing the power of the sun.

What I want to find out is: has the led bulb tech advanced enough that you can throw a new led bulb in a reflector 4x6 housing and still retain a proper cutoff line and have a focused beam of light on the road?

The 5dollar housing... first impression... not bad.... glass housing, metal backing with reflective surface inside, and decent dust cover..... but we will see with time

Still waiting for housings for the bottom set, and I got some more led bulbs to try.

Tonight I will find a wall and get some pics to show cutoff line or lack there of.

Tested as follows. Kissed the wall with the front end and procededed to make a mark with tape slightly below the light hotspot. Backed up to 25-30 feet from the wall and aimed the lights at that mark. Here are three photos shot on iPhone 1billion ultra max pro. 1st is auto focused, 2nd low exposure, 3rd high exposure.

As you can see this certainly isnt a projector quality light pattern but for a reflector housing this is a fairly clean pattern. Little to no scatter, no odd dark spots and a focused hotspot. I'd say this is win for $5 housing + 38$ dollar led bulbs. I'll also note that while driving around tonight no one flashed me.

For reference here's a photo of messed up led pattern.

As you can see lots of scatter no clear focused point.

And here my wife caught a pic of me testing out the lights on my own retinas.There was no glare while looking at the light unless you get way down low where the focused beam is pointing.

Hopefully this information can be useful to some. And put to rest the idea that led cannot be retrofitted and properly aimed to avoid blinding other drivers.

I wonder how that compares to the purpose built headlights like the ones Napa sells or the Holley branded ones.

If your up to the task would you mind getting some photos of the beam pattern against a wall at 25 ft? Id be curious to see how the light pattern compares.

I run the Summit brand ones $100 each plug into the stock sockets, they have a cut off, DOT approved.

I use the 7" ones.

I’ve been considering this low buck option. Glad to see you posting this @chief_shotts.
Also fwiw, for bargain priced Amazonian type LeD bulbs, I’ve had great luck with Auxbeam in several applications now. Bright, long life, good fit, etc.
The latest set I bought was cheaper than new conventional bulbs. It was like $50-60 for a set of 4 bulbs, hi and low beams. And it was their newer ones with no external pigtail and capactitor thingy or whatever that is.

I had no big complaints about the cheaper Amazon LED headlights, they fit and worked.
The RMS units I replaced them with were way better, much brighter and a more defined pattern. They were three times the price though.
My old eyes need all the help I can give them.

I've heard good stuff about auxbeam. I was turned onto beamtech/techmax from another forum... so that's what I went with. It's hard to argue with bulbs that cost less and have better light output.

I will be glad to but it will be a while. My truck is still being restored.

Great post, that's definitely a good budget option. I've got the RMS Lighting setup, I feel like they might have a slightly better pattern, but at $300, idk if it's $250 better lol. Great to know there's another option out there!

Have used Aux in several internment clusters, and they are dimmable, and last, been in several years, and going strong. Appreciate the info.
