Ambulance Vans!

Well, I've gone and done it. I've bought some more vans, but these ones are Duramax diesel vans. Two are mine, one is waiting on my buddy to pick it up. If I can bag one more of them, then I'll likely keep one of these ones.

I'm in if they are 4wd. Since seeing the independent suspension setup on the old chevy vans (rare), I've wanted one. Be a great hunting vehicle. Not sure about the diesel though.....I don't know squat except there's no fire with it....and it aint cheap lol.

They are 2wd. It's incredibly rare to find an Express van that is 4x4.

I'm having a hard time figuring out what these vans are actually worth. They are all super high miles (around 550k) but very well mechanically maintained. Being ambulances, people's lives depended on them being reliable. With that amount of run time, I would have to assume that the engine and trans have both been replaced already too.

They are 2wd. It's incredibly rare to find an Express van that is 4x4.

I think the only 4wd vans, even that era, were Quigley’s. I’d never seen one in person but we had a few of them up on the North Slope. All were Quigley’s.

In the HD stuff, yes. There were factory built AWD GM vans, but they were 1/2ton only.

Quigley still converts the new ones. They will convert used ones too, but only on super primo nice vans. Over 10 years old? Nope. Over 50,000 miles? Nope. Rusty undercarriage components? Nope. It costs around 20k too, iirc.

I believe I'm going to keep this one for the time being, but sell the other one whole. Rather than parting the other one out. I don't really have the time to go swapping parts around to the white van and yellow van right now anyway. Best I can figure, these vans in good running condition should be worth upwards of 7k.

Oh yeah, I realized Thursday morning that the van I've currently been driving has been deleted, lol. So there's no DPF or DEF nonsense to worry about. I'm not sure if the EGR is still in use or not. It has a big muffler installed on the exhaust... I kinda want to replace it with straight pipe.

change out those top lights for spot lights and put a gun turret on it then go hog hunting.

So the question is, is a Duramax easier to say do a turbo R&R in a van versus a pickup?

Seems like any rear of engine work in a pickup is pretty diabolical with a Duramax. With a removable doghouse however...

Ok, so I forgot to get back to this. After having the doghouse off on one of them, I'm going to say that access to everything is pretty decent. Maybe better than a pickup. Definitely better than a '03-'09 medium duty truck.

However, the doghouse is significantly bigger than a gasser van and of course the floor opening is bigger to match. The passenger footwell is significantly smaller than a gasser van. To remove the doghouse, the passenger seat must be removed. It's only 4 bolts, but it's worth mentioning.

Also, I had the doghouse off of the non-deleted van, basically for no reason. By the time I got it home, there was a message displayed on the dash "DEF system fault, 60 miles until 65mph max speed". I put the scanner on it and found some glow plug fault codes (unrelated) and a EGT sensor #2 fault. I didn't see the sensor under the van, so I pulled the doghouse. And still didn't see it. Turns out, I had overlooked it underneath. It was right at the DEF injector area.

Today I put in a new EGT sensor (old one broke off, I simply welded in a new bung) and cleared the codes again. Started it up, DEF system fault was gone. Yay! But there was now a message that read "emissions system fault, 175mi until 65mph max speed. Boo! Only codes were the same ones for glow plug #'s 1,3 and 6. So I drove it about 5 miles to get it hot and cleared the codes again. No more codes and no more future limp message on the dash. Yay again!

I'll see how it does on a cool start tomorrow. I've never known bad glow plugs to cause a limp mode situation.

Ohh man, Van lifer's dream vans. High Tops you can stand up in. So much cheaper than a 80,000 Promaster or Mercedes.

Yeah, they really are perfect for the van lifers. Economical diesel, high top, rooftop heat and AC (just from van though), 115v heater, insulated, big power inverter, 115v outlets, etc.

Unfortunately, I don't think there's many van lifers in my area. At truck stops I'll see people with rundown, beat to sh!t pickups/vans/campers, but that's it.
