Wrench/Socket Size & Tool Guide

I am going to make a log here of the tool sizes needed that I documented in some of my write ups so that it may help somebody else as a guide to have things ready instead of guessing and climbing under a truck or into an engine compartment with the wrong size tools.

These sizes are from a 1989 GMC Suburban V-1500 5.7L TBI 700r4. May vary from year to year or on other models.

Engine Compartment

Battery

Battery Terminal Bolt - 5/16"
Battery Hold Down Bolt - 1/2"

Motor

Negative Battery Cable Terminal and ECM Motor Ground Terminal and Rear Tensioner Brace Bolt (Located in front of thermostat housing) - 9/16"
Rear Tensioner Braces - 9/16"
Alternator Positive Cable Stud - 10 mm
Brake Booster Line to TBI Unit - 3/4" & 5/8"
Intake Manifiold Mounting Bolts - 9/16"
Heater Core to Manifold Pipe Fitting - 1 1/16"
Distributor Hold Down Bolt - 9/16"
Distributor Cap - 1/4" or Phillips Head Screwdriver
Ignition Coil Mounting Bolts - 1/2"
Fuel Line Bracket on Left Rear Head - 1/2"
Fuel Lines to TBI Unit - 3/4" & 5/8"
Crusie Control/Throttle Cable/Trans Cable Bracket - 9/16" & 1/2"
Center Bolt Valve Cover Bolts - 10 mm
Thermostat Housing Bolts - 9/16"
Water Pump Bolts - 9/16"
Fan Shroud Bolts - 10 mm
Tensioner Pulley Nut - 5/8"
Clutch Fan Nuts - 1/2"

Exterior

"Paddle" , "Big Guy" or "Dumbo" Mirrors

Outer Cover - T-20 Torx
Adjustment Bolts - 10 mm

Drivetrain

Front Suspension

10 Bolt Axle Cover Bolts - 1/2"
10 Bolt Axle Fill Plug - 11/16"

Rear Suspension

Rear Shock Upper Mount - 11/16"
Rear Shock Lower Mount - 7/8" & 13/16"
10 Bolt Axle Cover Bolts - 1/2"
10 Bolt Axle Fill Plug - 3/8" Square Drive

Transfer Case

Fill/Drain Plugs - NP241C Transfer Case - 1 3/8" or 1 3/16"

Fluid Capacities and Types

NP241C Transfer Case - Dextorn Mercon II - 3 Quarts
10 Bolt Axle Rear - 80W90 GL5 - 2 Quarts
10 Bolt Axle Front - 80W90 GL5 - 2 Quarts

That's a pretty big list! Thanks for the info! I know where I'm going to look up sizes, so I don't have to shuttle the kids getting different size sockets, etc.

Not to offend anyone and nothing personal at all, but if you can't use the right size socket for the bolt, then you REALLY should not be working on anything.

Good sockets can be had cheap and the right size will get the job done much easier.

I probably have $300 in my socket set. And most of them are Snap On, Wright and Cornwell.

Not on a TBI engine. I use 12 point swivel gear ratchet wrench.

THEN TRY GETTING ****** SOCKET ON TBI DISTRIBUTOR HOLD DOWN BOLT THEN. There's so much bs in the way already socket and ratchet aint doing it. Swivel ratchet gear wrench.

Settle down Dave. I have done it, using a wobble extension and socket. :waytogo:

But i also have the correct distributor wrench.

Somtimes it's nice to know if you are laying under a truck and you forgot a cartain size wrench or socket but you happen to have a metric, aw fuggit......
