I'm guessing we are looking at an Electronic Spark Control (knock) module. This one happens to be TBI.

Appears to be a vacuum switching solenoid that is missing a vacuum line.

I don't think it is an EGR solenoid, but I really don't know. Does the truck still have a vacuum diagram?

I'm spitballing here, but I'd bet that is an engine from a newer truck with a throttle body injection. This picture of the 1987 throttle body shows an EGR solenoid.

So yes, you don't need it.

From my 1985- 305.
I’m pretty sure it’s the egr bleed solenoid
