Check for sloppy hinges, bad weatherstripping will cause rattling too. Check latch adjustment also.

You are correct.I thought the th425 was the front wheel drive trans they used behind the monster block Cadillacs, and Olds Toronados? Or am I miss-remembering?
Yup the beefy boy ones in the Winnebagos did I don't know motor home classes that's above my pay grade but the bigger onesSome also had straight cut planetary gears..
Yep, reason for the straight cut was to eliminate the thrust to the back of the case, it was preventing lubrication to the rear case thrust washer and wiping it out, it was later remedied by replacing the thrust washer and plate with a TH350 pump bearing and is standard now in any rebuild, there's arguments on the strength of the straight and helical gears too, some say they're stronger but they have less gear contact than the helical, and it's common to put 1200-1400hp to them with helical gears, soooo???Yup the beefy boy ones in the Winnebagos did I don't know motor home classes that's above my pay grade but the bigger ones
Most crane gearboxes are helical cut gears. Older ones will be straight cut but noisey as ****. Every once in a while I come across a herringbone cut set of gears in a gearbox but it's kinda rare due to expense of machining.Yep, reason for the straight cut was to eliminate the thrust to the back of the case, it was preventing lubrication to the rear case thrust washer and wiping it out, it was later remedied by replacing the thrust washer and plate with a TH350 pump bearing and is standard now in any rebuild, there's arguments on the strength of the straight and helical gears too, some say they're stronger but they have less gear contact than the helical, and it's common to put 1200-1400hp to them with helical gears, soooo???
Yeah, they are noisy, knew a guy that had a motorhome with one you heard it all the time very irritating to say the least.. Haven't seen herringbone cut gears in quite a while didn't think they even made them anymore..Most crane gearboxes are helical cut gears. Older ones will be straight cut but noisey as ****.
