Finally! A day where the house didn't need something done urgently. Decided to refit my dash pad and actually install my new bezel all the way for the first time. Fit could have been better, but could have been worse also. LMC parts are mid quality really and man, I'm glad I kept the old hardware. Had to mix and match screws for an OE fit/finish. Never, ever throw anything away until your build is done and even then I'd say squirrel it for a rainy day.

Looks like people have been having fun with the weather starting to cool off... After a week of research and tinkering, I found out that when I installed the Moroso recurve kit over a decade ago, the younger and dumber me installed the center plate upside down which was part of my issues. Also found that the terminals on the distributor cap were loose(probably from me leaning on it trying to get it on and off...stupid aluminum). Corrected all that, reset the base timing, and took her for a short test drive. Holy cow, what a difference... Still more tuning to go, but the squat and chirp on the 30-35mph WOT downshift was fun.

About a week and half ago, I pulled the front diff out my 78 K20 to do a swap with a friend for a 3.73 diff to match my rear end. While the diff was out seemed like a good time to address a few bottom end engine leaks, so I dropped the pan and removed the rear main cap to change the rear seal. Guess what I found? A LOT of copper showing, a bunch of black plastic chips in the oil pan, plus what appeared to be a throttle spring in there? On top of that, the oil pickup tube was LAYING in the oil pan! I have no idea how long that was like that, or if it just fell out as I was removing the pan, but I nearly soiled my britches. The black plastic chips had me freaked out that maybe the engine had one of those nylon timing gears that was about to leave the chat, so I pulled the timing cover, too. To my relief, the gears and chain are newish steel and no chain slop. I suspect one of those damn plastic gears grenaded at some point in the engine's life and someone changed the gears and chain (and possibly the cam) without dropping the pan to clean it out. Which would also explain why the front pan gasket was not seated to the timing cover properly, had about a half inch of RTV on it, and still leaked like a sieve. I have no explanation for the spring except that someone must have dropped it in the oil galley years ago and it went all the way through. It wasn't even damaged. One more thing - the bolt holding the balancer to the crank wasn't tight when I took it off. The bolt wasn't long enough, so the threads didn't bite good and someone had buggered them up so it wouldn't torque down. Got a longer grade 8 bolt, problem solved and torqued properly. Funny the can of worms you open sometimes, but thank goodness I found all that crap now. This all in a daily driver that ran perfectly.

Soooo.....I spent this past weekend under the truck on my brand new asphalt driveway (yay!!!) rolling in new 30 under main and rod bearings in (journals were all in excellent shape), new oil pump (with the pickup tube spot welded to it!), new seals, gaskets, filter, etc. A lot more time and money than I planned on spending and one very smashed finger later, and it's mostly ready to run again once the diff swap is done. On top of that, my spare truck, 2002 Dodge Ram 1500, started smoking periodically like an old locomotive, so that one is on it's way out. It's been circling the drain for a while now, so I suspect it's not long for this world. All the more reason to get the old Chevy back on the road!!

Wes invited south to the cars and coffee meet, which turned out to be a mostly Alfa Romeo group. But all are welcome. Took the back roads south via the Chuckanut Hwy along the coast.

Went through the sleepy town of Edison, and ended up at the meet. We had breakfast and then I expected everyone to mingle about the Alfas, but everyone congregated around the truck. They were quite enamored with it.

I’m not a euro car guy (even though I have a distant watercooled VW past) but some of them were gorgeous and I can only imagine quite a hoot to drive.

The truck did flawless and it was incredibly enjoyable couple hours of driving.
I've learned more about Eye-Talian cars in the last few years than I ever wanted to know thanks to our owner lol. Those GTV's like the red one are beautiful and fun to drive. Alfas were some of the earliest cars to have 5-speeds and 4 wheel disc brakes

No pics but I changed the gear oil in the 9 inch over the weekend.

My brother went to the Rod Run in Pigeon Forge a couple weekends ago and I told him if he saw any vendors with an old 1979 TN license plate to get me one.You can run YOM plates here if you fill out a form for a one time fee.

He brought this one to me which I thought was cool even though he didn't know my plate number....they both have 697 in them. Removed one letter so its not all over the internet lol.

I cleaned up the shop more (put the tools away and such) then cleaned up the steering gear box to prepare it for new seals. Going to try to get the transfer case in the wash tub so I can start getting that clean. We will be doing new shifter shafts to try to get the lights working in the dash as well.

I didn't now TN was already doing stickers in '79. GA didn't get away from physically stamping the year until '83 and certain plates were stamped all the way to ~'90-92

Got up to the shop early Saturday and made some good progress. Stayed till about 2pm, then headed down to Atlanta for the C10s in the City pop up meet

Decided to come back to the shop after the meet and get more done so I didn't have to drive up on Sunday. Got everything out of the way and ready to yank the trans, then figured I'd pull the motor at that point since it would've only been 2 more bolts. But nooooo, the trans WOULD. NOT. SEPARATE. from the bellhousing. It was almost 10:30 when I gave up, I was yanking/prying/cussing and was about to either throw out my back or shake the truck off the lift. So I put bolts back in it, set it back on the crossmember and called it a night.

I think they were the first year made for a sticker. I was born in 77 the year they issued this style and only ran until 83 before they changed to a different kind.

The "JOINT" farm truck plates were still stamped. I didn't know if you could register those and they were lettered in green which I'm allergic to anyways. Im just glad I dont have to shell out 30 something bucks every year for plates now lol.

Don't worry, I bumped them with the forklift. You'll have the limited edition, one of one fenders soon enough
Don't forget to check fitment on the fender stretcher, pre-drill all the emblem and molding holes before shipping.
