This is different than any timing plate I've had on my various vehicles over the years. They all had numbers on both sides, with 0* in the center. This one has 0*-12* going one direction, just like in 89's picture above. I have to assume that 8* is BTDC, which is what my timing is supposed to be set at.

The one I posted is for a TBI motor, they get set to 0*.

I've been keeping a list of things I've done to the truck, and how much they've cost, since I bought it for $2500 in the middle of September. I've done 83 different repairs costing a total of $4962. Currently I've got 10 things left on the "to do" list, most of which won't get done until Spring now that the cold, wet, weather has arrived.

But they can benefit from a little bit more...my 350 TBI is currently set at 8 degrees BTDC with the magic wire unplugged. I initially set it to 0 when I installed the new distributor but it was so weak... I later bumped it to 4 and it was much better. I was going to try 6 but moved it further than I intended and after a test run I just left it at 8. As always, these trucks are old and each one is different so...YMMV.

Found it. It sits at 12 o'clock, under and behind the water pump. This is not going to be easy to check timing. My only question is what is the round thing, that looks like it holds a pencil, for?

40 years ago I drank to Koolaid. New tool I had to have! Literally turn you engine into a distributor machine. See the RPMs and timing advance digitally. It was great for it's time.

I was able to easily recurve the advance and see total advance, vacuum advance etc. 5 years and technology passed it by. Probably hasn't been out of my toolbox for 20 years, but here are the pictures:

Inductive clip to #1, probe in the holder and connect to the battery, see RPM and advance.

I finally took my crusty radiator in to the shop. Julio said he would clean and rod out all the crusty rust. Well, it's a lot better, but no way he took off the end caps and "rodded" it in <18hrs. And for this he charged me $300. Cheaper than a new one I guess, and back the next day.

Now while the front is open, I am trying to install a new water pump. Some problems: the bolts into the manifold are seized, I snapped one already and another is not budging. Crap.

My P/S pump has been misaligned forever, remounting it correctly is why I'm tearing front end off. Should I delete the A/C bracket since I have no plans to put A/C in?

Oil cooler and its mounts might need replaced:

When I first got my truck, it had lots of electrical problems. Being naive, I thought it was the battery, so I bought a new one. (The problems were dirty wires and poor connection/terminations, which I finally fixed....)

Being a doofus, I did not consider what physical size battery I needed, and ended up getting a Group 94, which is about 6" too long for my tray. It has been kinda rattling around for two years.

So to avoid taking out my radiator and all the other stuff I really needed to do, I built a battery riser that bolts down to the tray, that I can screw the battery base to. Now it sits flat and won't jam and batter my R headlight socket.

Baby steps....

I had the same issue, so I went to the parts store and bought a generic clamp. Had to drill new holes but it's sturdy now.

This weekend, I finally installed my reverse light switch on my 3 speed floor shifter, now I have working reverse lights again.

I have a few more things planned before winter.

I just received mine in the mail. Now I just need the weather to cooperate.

Put in a new fuel pump and fuel gauge. It's nice knowing how much gas you have. Got started on (finally) rebuilding my vent windows but ran into 2 problems. First, I have somehow misplaced my vent window rebuild kit with all of the rivets. Had to end up ordering another one. Second, I had put some used vent windows from an '81 or newer year model in because on the driver's side my old one was broken where the tang comes down from the window frame (the piece where the spring, lock washer, and nut are). I was planning on using the glass and frame from the replacement window on my original window, because the rubber replacement kit was for my truck's year model, and the frame of the replacement was for a different style. What I never realized is this... Even though you can interchange the whole vent window assembly between model years, the glass itself is NOT the exact same shape from year to year. So I won't be able to just switch the glass from the spare frame to my original one like I wanted. As a result, I had to order ANOTHER rubber kit (and OF COURSE you have to buy them as a pair). I really wish that LMC had a quicker turnaround time.
