Can one of you guys tell me what an original vin dashboard tag looked like? Mine is a solid piece of rust but is still readable. I need to replace my windshield and that would be a good time to clean it up and refresh it. Thanks.

Surface rust is normal, I don't believe they ever had a coating of any kind on them. Just bare steel. Yours must not be too bad? A water leak around the window can rot them out, but that usually makes it nearly impossible to read.

If your DMV is fussy,you might not want to mess with it. You could make it look altered.
