Ok guys i need your help. I started my truck this morning and drove it about 1/4 mile the trans was shifting good then all of a sudden it dropped down to first gear. It still has reverse and neutral and park but no 2nd or 3rd even when i manually shift. Do you guys think my governor is bad?

Maybe check the vacuum line to the trans. When was the last service on it?

Sounds like you may be in for a rebuild, but check the vac modulator first.

I would first say it's Vac Mod BUT since you said it just "Dropped Down" into first. Vac mod wouldn't have done that. It just wounldnt up ****, but one there, it should have stayed there.
So, next to check is governor, but again, I find it hard to believe that even a governor would allow it to just "drop down" to first.

Do check those first though. The Drop Down part is what gets me. EVen if you lost a clutch pack, the trans should have just spun up into like it was in N and not drop down.

So now that makes me thinks something may have gone wrong with the Detent Cable or Detent valve aka Kickdown. I have seen Th350's get a stuck TV valve and it never shifted out of 1st. Replaced the stuck cable and all was well. In that case, Guy hit the WOT, downshifted to 2nd since was already moving at 40mph, then it went on into 3rd afer like 70mph, but then after he came to a stop, it never got out of 1st again and he called a tow truck. Lucky for him, I had it fixed in an hour for $80 when he out trying to get a loan for a new trans.

It was the govenor thanks for the help!

After reading your other posts, and that it didn't just drop down, I was going to say, YES, it's the governor, cuz a Vac mod just woudln't allow up shift, but it woudln't spin up like in N either, governor will. And if it did drop down after a full throttle downshift and didn't come back up and then wouldn't shift afterwards, then it would be a stuck cable or detent valve. That's how you eliminate the only 3 things that determine shift points in a Th350.

That's why I always tell everyone, when telling someone about a trans problem, be VERY SPECIFIC cuz it does make a world of difference in diagnosis. It's different when someone can jump in and take it for a drive, but when getting help online, MUST BE VERY SPECIFIC.

At any rate, don't take that as an ass chewing. Just mentioning it so others are aware, becuase it does make a difference in Tomatoe or Tomahhto when trying to help someone diagnose especially an auto trans problem.
