Hey guys new to this site but looks awesome. Im hoping someone can help me with this one, I have a 1988 chev c30 with a t400.
I started my truck up and went to put it in drive but would only go in neutral or park, I went through all the gears but ill I had was neutral. It rolled back a couple feet then went into gear and now seems fine. is this a sign of a problem or did it just stop in a weird spot. No problems with the trans before hand and has plenty of fluid.
any help would be great thanks

Do you mean that whichever position the shifter was placed in, you could not get the truck to move - like as if it was in neutral?

You can inspect the entire shifter linkage from the column lever down to the detent coupling - just to make sure everything is in order.

Start at the firewall. While an assistant strokes the column lever, check that the shifter rod moves and that it is securely attached to the cross rod at the end. Make sure the cross rod is in it's socket on the outboard side. And finally that the detent coupling moves end to end with a series of clicks (5).

Other than that - it sounds like an internal problem.

Yes which ever position it was in was like it was in neutral, except park, it was ok. Linkage looked to be OK, if there were a internal problem wouldn't it most likely crap out all together and not start working again?

See if your pump is putting out. Disconnect a cooler line (doesn't matter where, except for ease of access), start the engine and check for flow at the open tubing.

Just for guidance:

Lower trans fitting is hot ATF out from the tranny. Upper trans fitting is the return from the cooler back into the tranny.

So- OUT from the bottom, IN at the top.

OK it seems to have pressure in the lines, and all seems to be working fine right now. Is it possible for the hydraulic pump to kick in and out?
