@Preston Tucker my K30 has the W crossmember and it's above the frame rail. I would think due to the fact my frame is deeper than your K20, you should have it below.
Ok thanks, nv4500 guys if you could chime in here that would help me soo much.

I have a sm465 to an np208 and the crossmember sits below the frame rail but it was a swap. It’s also backwards... either way... I have the w one. K25

Im doing an Nv4500 swap and I got my nv4500, 205 t case and its all married together and mocked up in the frame without a cross-member on jack stands and blocking. I went to a local yard and got the top crossmember in this picture. I did some reading and was pointed towards this one. Called the s type? Well i have it all in there with the tranny sitting on the cross-member but theres no body on it so i dont know if the tranny cross-member is supposed to be mounted above or below the frame rail for height clearance. I have it on top currently and i feel like its supposed to be under. Whos done this before?
Im using the nv4500 mount bushing mount that was in the truck i stole it out of for fitment.

I've seen it done both ways, so do it which ever way you need it done to give you the correct angle. The angle is way more important than above or below and why they come factory with a spacer incase you need to make it even lower.

The one on my '89 has a similar shape to the one above but isn't exactly the same. It has two drain holes in the bottom and mounts with just the four bolts on the crossmember.
Looking for one for my 89???
