This is on a '65 that has been in service its entire life. Yes it shifts a little funky, but that is internal of transmission. I rebuilt it but it never shifted the same after. Going to rebuild it again. Now to the photos....

You may need to replace the upper and lower column bearings. Maybe some bushings need to be replaced. The column can be rebuilt if you want to keep it stock. Otherwise it's floor shifter or other options.

I had seen something in my factory maint. manual but it was just about how the shifter linkage is connected to various manual transmissions. In reference to adjusting the linkage it says to check the appropriate chassis manual. I don't know what that is and whatever it was I don't have it. I don't understand why adjusting the linkage would not be in my manual, I went through all I could find and there wasn't any adjusting the shifter linkage in a manual transmission. There must be another book.

I am pretty sure it must be something inside the column. Everything from the bottom of the steering column to the trans is aligned.

DoubleDingo is spot on. That collar at the end of the steering column rotates to adjust the clearance between the shift levers. It's there to compensate for wear over time. When there is too much clearance between the shift levers, you are going to have issues engaging any gear, or it may even get stuck in reverse. Adjustment of that collar will remove the excessive clearance.

You need to check out what lugnutz has done on his blog. He walks you through a steering column rebuild on a 60’s C10. There are good instructions and plenty of pictures. Very helpful!!

And he has documented quite a few other things as well that might help some of us.

A replacement floor shifter can be your friend. I have replaced so many column shifts in the 70s and 80s. The column can be rebuilt, but the floor shift doesn't hang up, ever.

Sometimes all it takes to fix the shifting is to remove the shift lever and spray WD40 into your column. There are some videos on YouTube . It made mine much smoother.

Mine was a 72 and not as much electrical in the column
