Be sure the linkage and detents are lined up right.

Procedure:

1.Position transmission lever (A) in neutral position by moving lever clockwise to the park detent, then counterclockwise two detents to neutral, Fig. 9.
2.Place column shift lever in neutral gate notch by rotating lever until it drops into neutral gate notch. Do not use indicator pointer as a reference to position shift lever.
3.Attach rod (C) to transmission shaft assembly (B).
4.Slide swivel and clamp onto rod (C), then attach to column shift lever.
5.Hold column lever against neutral stop, park position side, then tighten attaching nuts.

Diagnostic for - No Drive In Drive Range:

1.Low oil level (check for leaks)
2.Manual control linkage not adjusted properly.
3.Low oil pressure. Check for blocked strainer, defective pressure regulator, pump assembly or pump drive gear. See that tangs have not been damaged by converter.
4.Check control valve assembly to see if manual valve has been disconnected from manual lever pin.
5.Forward clutch may be stuck or damaged. Check pump feed circuits to forward clutch, including clutch drum ball check
6.Sprag or roller clutch assembled incorrectly.
