Take a big flat screwdriver or medium prybar, put the blade in the teeth of the ring gear straight on, up against the case where convenient and use that to wedge the ring gear from moving. One hand on the screwdriver and the other on the wrench. Do this for all three bolts.

An actual flywheel tool works too, but let's keep it sasquatch style.

Seems an awful lot of play with 5/8 wrench but 9/16 is too small

They are short and will usually be either a 5/8 or 11/16". I have very occasionally found them to be metric on some aftermarket torque converters. If 5/8 seems really loose and 9/16" is too tight, try a 15mm.

Yeah, sometimes GM liked to confuse the issue by integrating metric fasteners into the mix. One of the regular posters has actual experience from the manufacturers perspective.

16mm is almost exactly the same size as 5/8 and is almost never used in any vehicle I've ever worked on. You occasionally come across 14mm and 12mm in some stuff, but the vast majority of fasteners that are metric are going to be 10mm, 13mm, 15mm, or 17mm. Most metric tool kits don't even have a 16mm

Hit it with your purse.

j/k

Seriously though, put the wrench on it with the wrench facing straight down and hit the end of the wrench with a hammer. The shock should break the bolt loose without turning the flywheel. If it is too tight for that to work, put a prybar or big screwdriver on the teeth of the flywheel wedged against the side of the bellhousing on the drivers side.
