So I have a 1988 chevy r20 with a 14 bolt srw in it. I recently picked up a dually axle out of a 1980 1ton to swap in. I believe the axle is a Dana 70 but not positive. What's the best way to identify this axle? Also if it is a Dana 70 what type of diff fluid to I run in it?

if it's the wide dually axle for dually pickup it will be a dana 70. if it's the narrow dually rear end for cab and chassis its a 14 bolt like you have but narrower. look at space from spring perches to backing plates to notice. also a dana 70 is beefer looking than a 14 bolt and the front pinion doesn't bolt in like the 14 bolt does

Gonna have to relocate spring perches and shock mounts too.

ok then must be a dana 70. My shock mount and spring perches are already in correct location as my r20 seems to have the same width frame rails as a one ton for some reason. what weight rear end dope should I run in it?

All square bodies have the same width frame rails, it's the spring hangers that are different widths between a 1 ton and others.

Your shock mounts should also be in opposite locations from the d70hd.

Yep !!! :waytogo:

Maybe some pics of these axles, and we can you help you ID what you have. Noway is a D70HD going to bolt right into a 3/4 ton Burb.

I want to load some picture but cant seem to do it form my iphone or ipad. I can try to give you a better description it has a sway bar and the cover kind of reminds me of a dana 60 front cover with a fill plug.

Wait, a crew can changes everything. Iirc, ALL crew cabs use a 1 ton frame so the spring spacing should be correct for the d70hd.

Ohh yeah. Big difference. In the Crew Cabs, Even the 20 aka 3/4 ton crew cabs are on 1 ton frames so I'd imagine it would also have the 1 ton spring hangers too. So you're going from a SRW CCLB, to a DualRW CCLB right?

Makes a bit more sense now knowing that. :waytogo: I misunderstood. I think someone else is working on a dually into a Burb or has asked about it recently.

Once upon a time, I got some from energy suspension but I think I had to match up the dims to their universal stuff.
