Im in denial... but if my sm465 mated to an NP 205 decided that it wanted to work in first and second gear, and grind like a bastard when I try to go to third, and not go in, is she blown?

Not blown, just sounds like it needs repaired. Try matching rpm with road speed and see if it goes in?

Sounds like a broken Synchro ring. The Synchro ring is blocking the shift fork from being able to crossover. It just flat won't go right? No grinding or nothing, just like trying to shove the stick over a block wall??? But yet it'll go back into the 3rd OK and back to 2nd? Reverse OK too? IF all is well the shift rails are all good, and it's just blocked when it's trying to slip over the 4th gear.

No it DEFINITELY grinds

So it can still be a bad synchro, but not a broken ring, but chewed up teeth on the ring. Still sounds like a bad synchro to me, just not a broken one.

So what does that require me to do? Basically just take the tranny off and replace the ring?

After you remove the transmission you will have to open the case to inspect and replace all damaged parts at this time.

You will have to pull the trans and disassemble the rails and then pull the shaft with 4th gear and put new rings on. In all honestly, I'd just rebuild it. Get a Bearing, gaskets and Brass (synchros) kit. They're rock solid transmissions. Hard to hurt them but when a synchro goes it goes. Normally you have a little warning. As in, it will grind going into gear a bit but still go, or may pop out of a gear if that side of the synchro is worn.

Alright thank you

If you don't have trans assembly lube which unless you build alot you probably do not. Grab a jar of vaseline next time you're at WallyWorld Or Petroleum Jelly from the dollar store. You'll need it to hold those needle bearings in place for assembly, and I like to use it too to hold the gaskets in place unless you want to use Permatex or Silicone. If the Vaseline or Jelly don't hold good enough, put it in the fridge for about 30-45 minutes to make it thicker and stronger.
