Hey GM Squarebody,
The past week or so while driving my truck I feel a lot of heat coming off of the transmission boot and shifter of my 87 V20. I have a small trans fluid leak so I thought it was low so I put around a quart in until it was full. However, even after filling it up its still getting hot? Anyone know what this could be?

From what I understand about manual transmissions, when they're getting hotter than normal it might be a bearing giving out. What kind of fluid are you adding? Hopefully gear oil and not synthetic gear oil if you are. Synthetic gear oil doesn't play well with the synchros. Where is the leak coming from? If it's an input seal need to slide the tranny back, undo the front bearing retainer, and put a new seal in. Add new gasket and bolt it back in. Sounds easy, but mildly labor instensive.

I'd suggest purchasing an infrared temp gun and seeing what your actual temps are. Maybe you're just experiencing more heat because of outside air temps (hot/humid summer weather/hot pavement).

Also, those big blocks give off a lot of heat that radiates through the floor and tunnel

how hot is hot? if the fluid is getting hot you have a bearing going out. which is likely if you were a quart low. highdesertranger
