Divide the teeth on the ring gear by the number of the teeth on the pinion gear.

If you have the covers off, you can count the teeth, or you can look for markings of the teeth on the ring gear. Like a 41-10, would mean 41 teeth on the ring, and 10 on the pinion. Divide the # of ring teeth by the pinion teeth, so 41 divided by 10 = 4.1 which is 4.10 gears. Most gears are marked xx-x (if the pinion is a single digit) or xx-xx (if pinion is 2 digits, 10 or 11 etc) Fairly simple really once the covers are off.

counted em up. 3:73s and 3:08s. the only catch is my truck has 308 in the front already because the previous owner only switched the rear axle to 456 for pulling. should i just put the 12bolt 308 in? or switch the front and rear axle for the 10bolt rear with 373?

Just depends on what you want to do with the truck, what size tires are on it or are going to put on it...you gonna do any towing? Offroading?

Its got 35s with a 305 soon to be 350. i tow a couple fourwheelers occasionally with my 14ft landscape trailer. leaning towards the 373s and findin a 5speed to put in it somehow. anyone done it before?

3.73s or 4.11s would be even better, and if you plan to go bigger down the road I would keep the 4.56s under the bench. I dont think it would be real hard to do an NV4500 and I think NP241 transfer case but you'd more than likely have to redo your driveshaft lengths.

You might be able to if the adapter between the t-case/trans is the same, and the adapter sleeve is the same spline count, and/or if you can find an NV4500 from as close to the same production year as your truck as you can get. I think those had a really low 1st gear. Hopefully someone who knows for sure can chime in, otherwise google will have to be the way to find out.

What tranny is in it now? If its a 700r4, keep the 4.56 in the rear and do the front to match. If it's the 465 shift-it-yourself, then yeah, the 3.73's would be fine.
