Replacement Jeep Steering / Intermediate Shaft

I have a 1987 K5 4x4 (3" lift if it matters)

I have read that the Jeep Cherokee intermediate shaft from 1988-96 is a direct bolt on replacement for the Blazer steering shaft. Is there any particular year in that range that is best? I'm going to purchase a new shaft as I need my truck on the road ASAP and don't have time to go hunting in the junkyards.

Just shoot for the middle of that range. Just go with a 93 or somethin

I have a '93 I think in our truck.
Works like a champ.
We have pulled another from a random Cherokee in the yard and it looks identical.

get one and install it. Feel free to add any "modifications" to make you feel comfortable. Example, I didn't like the fact that the top side was clamped on and didn't have a bolt through it (like original). So I drilled a hole through and put a bolt through it.

Nice. I have a '78 Caprice (LS swap) daily driver that I've had almost 25 years now and it's in desperate need of a new steering box. I may do a shaft upgrade on it as well.

Man, that's a good looking shaft. And it came out of a Astro? What year? That yoke looks really sturdy. And cleasner than the Jeep one that most guys end up getting.

What engine do you have in whatever that is? Those are factory cast iron headers, where'd you get those? Did they come on the engine? The only factory headers I've seen were on a '67 427, and maybe a '60's 454, and a late '60's Hemi. What have you got there? Where did you get those?

Have one in my k5 from a 94.
While you are there change the bearing and collar at the bottom of the steering column. It's just above the top of the intermediate. Mine was shot and had some play.

What was wrong with the factory intermediate shaft in your pic above? It looks fine to me. and it has a good looking rubber seal in the upper coupler as well. I had to make a seal out of a new one that was to small. See my thread where I wrapped a piece of 1/4" tubing around the stiff outside of the new seal in order to get it to stay in the bottom of the coupling. The "coupling is the part that the steering shaft goes into that comes through the firewall. It's the thing at the top of the intermediate shaft the steering shaft goes into that has all the grease in it, if you've ever taken one apart. If you don't have to...don't! It's bad nasty! If that rubber seal, "boot" some people call it, at the bottom of the coupler cannot be bought anywhere.
I went through lengthy effort working with a couple of suppliers to finally find out that GM never released that seal for reproduction. Weird, huh?

The joint was pretty sloppy when it was in the truck, so we found the Jeep shaft upgrade and pulled the trigger.
