Removing paint

What have you guys found to be the most efficient way to remove paint from panels/ Stripper, hand sanding, power sanding (with what)? I'd love to find something that would sand down all the curved surfaces like around the wheel wells.

Media blasting is easiest but it costs $. I always just use 80 grit on the DA or air board sander, depending on the panel. Plastic parts are a different procedure.

aircraft stripper works pretty good too, just make sure you wear gloves.

If it's small area I use a paint removal wheel on a grinder. Gets it down to metal without hurting it. Got them at my local harbor freight for 4.95 a wheel lasts long

sander if it is small area. Last time when painting my one ton I have successfully used paint stripper and scraper from home depot. I believe they call it industrial grade or something similar.

I'm still looking for the "ideal" paint remover and made a small step forward in the search. Ran up some thread on piece of 3/8ths cold rolled, added a couple of fender washers and a lock nut.

Made a few rounds out of Scots Brite and put it all together chucked in an air drill motor.,spin it at 2000 rpm.

works, slowly.

I need to find Scots Brite strong enough to survive my angle grinder.

This doesn't really apply to on-vehicle body panels but for anythng you can transport it may be worth mentioning:

Go to your local memorial (grave stone) manufacturer and see if they'll blast parts for you. They don't blast the granite pieces everyday, but will usually help you out if you show up when they are running the equipment.

I used to go to the local woodstove reconditioner but they started charging way too much - like $20 for a cast intake manifold and $25 for a steel rim (one side only!). I forget how I found out about the grave stone guys but they are great. Usually only $10 for whatever you can carry. I think they don't tell the boss and just want some beer money.

I just towed a car for a headstone artist and asked her about that. She said she wouldn't be inclined to do it because she can't reuse her media if she does metal. Of course she also does glass so I may have to keep that in mind and do something custom that way down the road.
