Is there anyone on this site that has had any success with "NEW" R4 compressors being sold by the usual vendors: O Reilly, Auto Zone, Parts Geek, Rock Auto, and even a GM dealer in my location. I am having the fifth (5) one in the last five years replaced next week! The first two were Murray compressors and both started leaking at the front seal. The third one was furnished by a GM dealer and also started leaking at the front seal. All three of these units were installed by the same shop so I decided to try a different one. I found a mom and pop shop, highly recommended by friends, and they installed the fourth compressor on July 30 last year. They had told me that seal failure can come from overcharging the system. This one is a Four Seasons kit (accumulator, orifice tube, compressor) from Auto Zone. It worked fine until a month ago when it started making a random noise but still cooling fine. The shop said they would replace it under warranty and told me to stop using it before it possibly trashes the system.
My research has indicated that ALL of these compressors are made by Standard Motor Products, Lewisville TX, at a plant in Mexico. I have been dedicated to, and trying really hard, to keep this truck to as close to original as possible. I am retired and when I have to leave the house, this truck is my first choice. I drive about 200 miles a month and love using this fabulous machine.
Thanks for your input.
