My cab will be back from the painter in the next few weeks and I have started sorting out the wiring harnesses for the truck. I have the original harness for my '82 which has power locks but no power windows. I am putting power windows in it when I put it back together but the original harness does not support them. I have a donor truck which has power windows and locks and a complete cab wiring harness but is an '84. Does anyone know of any differences that I will have to watch out for when using the '84 harness in my '82? I have done some research and I have read there could be differences in the ECM circuits and gauge cluster. Would I be better off adapting my '82 harness to work, using the '84 and sorting out any differences or going with a aftermarket wiring set up like Painless offers?

The wiring diagrams for both years are posted on this site. Just pull them up and start comparing.

My guess is that most wiring differences from ‘82 to ‘84 were implemented with small supplemental wiring harnesses. GM liked keeping it simple for the assembly line. For example, if it needed a new emissions device they just addd the sensor or control, and plugged in the added wiring. They did not change the entire harness.

Thanks guys, never even thought of the wipers and dimmer relocate.

I spent some time laying it out and having a look at it tonight and discovers that, like 75gmck25 mentioned, I can unplug the power lock only harness and plug in the windows and doors harness. I appreciate your help!

Power windows, door locks and cruise control are all separate harness that plug into the main dash harness and fuse box. Moving the dimmer switch from the floor to the steering column (or vice-versa) is easy, the wire colors are the same, as is the switch connector. Just make the wire long enough to reach the switch.

If I remember correctly, the wiper wire colors are the same between dash and column, but the connector bodies are different. I went thru this exact issue on my truck 15 years ago, I have slept since then.

I'd just make my own add on harness for the power windows.
^^^ This

if the door harnesses are in good shape I would move them over to the original fuse panel
