If you can find good used OE fenders that would be my go-to. If you can't, then AMD or others premium lines of fenders are pretty good.

For the 70's models, good used GM fenders haven been realistically unavailable in my area for 30 years. The 80's fenders, while hard to find now, can still be found in good condition.

Until recent years, all aftermarket '73-'80 fenders were crap. I haven't had the opportunity to use any of them, but there ARE finally better replacements from places like AMD.

Aftermarket '81+ fenders have usually been pretty decent, in my experience.

The design of the front fenders traps water and various junk (leaves, dirt, etc.) in the bottom, so original fenders usually have significant rust. It sounds like aftermarket may now have improved, but in the past there were many that were poorly made and relatively thin metal

If you are paying a resto shop to restore original fenders it's about a wash money wise vrs new metal. Replacement metal is fine but will still take some refinement. I just got my blazer back from resto and used all AMD replacement metal and there is still a fair amount of finness Involved to get good body lines correct. That is to be expected and the body lines now are probably better than new. It all depends on the level of you build.

I just put a set of AMD fenders on mine they fit without modification and line up very nicely. The threaded inserts that are installed in them are nicer than the stock ones tack welded on the back side. I had to cut into the stock fenders to get to the back of them with vice grips as three of them broke the tack welds and would just spin.

Are you sure they weren't old aftermarket fenders? Those had a very bad habbit of the weld nuts breaking free. The GM ones, not so much, in my experience.

Not sure they were rusty and full of bondo, they may have been after market.
