Well boys today I bit the bullet and bought Memphis 3.5's 4x10's and a shallow mount 10" sub. Wish me luck, I'm gone build the box ported for the sub. It's all goin in my 83 single cab k2o. I'll be pushing the sub with a Sony xplod amp and just a pioneer head unit for my words. I'll keep yall updated.

Are you putting the Memphis 3.5's in the dash? Curious to know if they fit, I've been looking for some front fill speakers for a while now but can't find anything decent that fits blow the dash pad.

3.5's were a factory option, lmc shows them and the special brackets to mount them, but nobody I found sells the brackets themselves to use.

As for memphis stuff, my cousin had some 10's and and amp or two on them, man did it hit hard.

My Suburban came with the factory 3.5" dash speakers. They're crap. Currently running four 6x9's in the doors but need something up higher. Been thinking about a second amp and some better dash speakers plus a couple of 5.5's mounted in the rear roof-mounted air conditioner.

I asked about better dash speakers over at FSC and people just ripped me a new one for having 6x9's instead of component speakers, etc. Well, I'm not an audiophile but I like decent sound. Problem with a Suburban is there's a fair amount of cabin space involved and with component speakers the passengers hear mostly whatever speaker they're sitting near, so I figured full range speakers would be a better option.

Most of the upgrade 3.5's I've read reviews on cause the dash pad to be bumped up over the speakers. That won't do. Going to keep looking for some good speakers that fit.

That sucks on the dash pad, I would check into other 3.5's as well. I hear good things on the infinity kappas and some of the other more expensive brands.

I think 4x6's 4x10's and 6x9's get the job done just fine IMO. I got some cheapo boss 4x6's in all four corners of my 88(gmt400 newer body style deal) and it sounds good enough for me.

It's possible to mount 3.5's in the stock location, but without the brackets. There's plenty of clearance that way. We did that in a buddy's '91 base model K5 several years ago, before I knew about mounting brackets.

Or you can put dual 4's in the center (4x10) opening. I did that in my '77 and it sounds pretty good IMHO.

I like idea of dual 4's in the center section. I'm looking for fill, not stereo separation, so that might work out better. Might even get slightly better sounding speakers by bumping up a size.

Looking at the drop-in kit that LMC sells, it looks like a simple flat panel with mitered corners that holds the speakers. Should be easy to copy.

I didn't even make a mounting panel for them. They were 4inch speakers with 4 mounting tabs. I just bolted the two speakers together, then screwed the pair into the dash opening.
